  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

New again...

I gotta tell you guys.. this is one feature that Deanan and Rob pulled out at the last minute that has been a really big one for me personally..

It's so incredible not only being able to do all your playback and grading in Realtime, but to be able to Render; WHILE you are still going through your shots one buy one and grading; still in Realtime, is something everyone needs to experience :)

Now this is interesting.

I'd assume the background render runs at a lower priority, so that the foreground activity is realtime. Does the background render continue to run at 1:1 or better even if you are continuously viewing footage in realtime in the foreground?

If the Red One wasn't so heavy...My whole support gear has to go with tthe Red One! Its a steep price, but damn with the Scarlet delayed, more and more I feel tempted to just dive in and purchase the one and live with tripod shooting for a (good, long) while...

We are developing REDCINE-X to be cross-platform at great expense to us and free to you. ROCKETcine-X was developed by Deanan, Rob and Graeme because they could. There is no PC version of this one only because they have other things to do besides learning how to make PC apps and we only need one app ported to PC... the expensive (free) one.

Jim
Thanks for the additional information Jim :)

RedCine and RedCine-X are certainly appreciated and it's my hope that once Redcine-X is out, it'll become the only app needed across both platforms to do everything needed with R3Ds including command line/batch render stuff assignable to CPU, GPU or RedRocket as appropriate.

Cheers,

Paul

Is there support to render out OpenExr files? Seems they would retain more info than DPX.

Mkay, first of all... Please excuse my ignorance here. I do love you all even though I don't know you. But I do have to ask some questions.

I don't understand why you put resources on an limited app like this that will only reach a limited user base. :frown2: Why not put all efforts on Redcine-X that I just assume will be RR-accelerated (all else would be odd) and just a month away... You say that RC-X will be cross platform and out in August, so having all guys working on that would make more sense? Or is it the case that you have outsourced the development of RC-X since you say "they have other things to do besides learning how to make PC apps" where "they" refer to Deanan, Rob and Graeme. And that sentence alone could indicate that they don't really code for Windows, in other words they don't code RC-X...

Also thought we wanted to get away from the intermediate step of creating DPXs and make R3D's read naively in the major apps? So the use of a "DPX-makin' machine" seems a bit redundant? :confused5:

:emote_couch:

I don't know, it just seems odd too me. But that's most probably because I don't see the whole picture. Maybe ROCKETCine-X was developed more too be used as an internal test application and then shaped up to be released to the community. And that the development of ROCKETCine-X didn't steal any development time or RC-X...

Don't take this post as I'm being ungrateful or anything. I'm just curious...

Ok, but for those of us on the PC side and intent on getting the Rocket card, we can still get all the benefits and extract all the functionality (including background rendering and faster than RT DPX encoding) that the Mac side gets from using Rocketcine-x or are we unable to use/do certain things?

Pretty sure Jim has said multiple times that rendering is handled by the CPU so it supports whatever your computer supports.

The limiting factor on OpenEXRs would be either the lossless compression if your CPU is a little slow or your hard drive having to write an extra 6bits over dpx if you go uncompressed.

will the new color science be eventually available as part of the plugin for the Adobe CS4 suite? In other words, will we be able to take advantage of this new color science inside AE and Premiere or do we have to go to though Redcine-x and output the files to DPX first?

My guess is that happens whenever Adobe gets around to updating the plugin with the new Red SDK, right?

WOW!!!

Tech question.

I have 3 cards already installed in the Mac Pro 3.2 Octo.
a Kona LHe
a e Sata
a ATI Radeon 4870

can i install the RedRocket on top of that ? (or should i say ...between ?)

Antoine

Put your RED Rocket in slot #2. So that's ATI 4870 on bottom taking up slot #1 plus the accessory space. Then the Rocket card on top of that. Probably the Kona next and then the eSATA card on top.

If you need HD-SDI output from the Rocket, you will need to route the SDI cables out somewhere else as they come off the card attach to a slot-filler. But you have no slot openings. Some possible solutions were discussed in the RED Rocket thread, but I think a lot of us are waiting for the card to find our own solution.
