Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)
I tried to post a comment on that link today and I have signed in with my Facebook account. I couldn't post it and I couldn't login at my Facebook so I had to change my password.
Wow, their site is down or taking a fit trying to respond, like what we get here. I didn't have time yesterday to look at this. How come these sites and forums require so much server power.
Here's. an idea to avoid it, that Red/Reduser might like to use for future release days. They could 90% prioritise bandwidth and processing power to the main and release pages and completely cache them. Also lock out new threads. This would let the release pages and click path to them serve faster. Maintaining a simplified forum display engine could speed it up too, but a bit complex. However, a automatically updated archive version of the release thread would allow this, as most people just read the thread and don't post. Afterwards the archive version is scrapped. So the user can click to go to a reader version, or postable version. That should get a great reduction in server load. All forum main pages (listing the threads) could be cached to allow people to find threads in them quickly then wait ten minutes for threads to open (the actual threads themselves being uncached and de-prioritised along with all non essential functions (cp, subscriptions, search, anything under quick links or unrelated to viewing or posting to the release threads).
Redray/projector/cheap scarlet might lead to server meltdown, so maybe a separate site is needed.
It will be interesting to see how international sales, reliability and after market servicing is handled, it is enough of an issue having to return things to the US.
I would never buy from these guys unless they had a strong US headquarters that could be dealt with. Their booth at last years NAB raised some red flags for me as a an English speaking customer. They have a LONG ways to go to be serious competition in the USA in regards to all the other major players. I'm sure they will rock in China though.
And I hate editing CinemaDNG. Red Raw all day everyday
I dont think there is a great problem of getting 6k sensor out or any kind of sensor. the biggest problem is what you do with that sensor and the signal you are getting from... There are tons and tons of copys of GoPro on the market from China, most of them probably come from the same supplier but they cant achieve the image quality,...
If i remember correctly there was a Cinema5D review of the 4k camera KineFinity made and there were problems with even turning on the camera,... it has to do a lot with software this days. Cameras are just computers now. Not a lot of mechanical stuff in there anymore.
There are a number of smaller sensor manufacturers out there they could be using a latest chip.
Engineering, it actually doesn't take a million dollars to get something working once your sensor provider provides a proper module reference design, even $10k if recording ability included, you could spend several months programming by yourself to get a system working if you were experienced (you are likely not). You don't have to do it the Red away, it was a volume design, expensive, but cheap in volume. These guys are probably spending down to a hundredth as much as Red, but may lack the volume to make it as cheaply as Red, meaning it is more per camera. The way around this is commodity processing engines, which might be slightly lacking, but is low cost over a span manufacturing volumes. All you have to do is design the custom head component. Somebody was telling me that interface knowledge break through was coming along and at sometime people could design for the custom standard interfaces protected by licensing. (confusing but this results in keeping people out). An example of a cheap processing system is an multi-core arm with a high level general processing GPU (or just a sufficiently high level general processing GPU). I think that arm has a 16 core reference design out. Now add a cineform license.
Ohh dear. I hate it that companies don't listen and it comes back and bites us. A number of companies are going to be undercut by this true, predictable, competition, but it is not as bad as it looks for BMC, and Red. The problem is that the cameras are behind on frame rate, and this year BMC is probably going to double the mini or match the max spec, and Red could potentially offer double the frame rate for 4k and 6k on the lowest camera. So many others did not make adequately competitive efforts and failed.
If only somebody would do a 8k still 4k video foveon like camera, like with that 100mp sensor Sony is rumoured to be working on (maybe that is what they are planning).
