Well...

The insides look great but it's the i/o that bugs me.

1 fw800
3 usb

Now there are articles saying that these usb's are running almost as fast as fw400.

Great, dandy, fine.

My gripe is that when you call it a MacBookPRO then it should have "pro" connections, and certainly not less of them than the last generation 15".

If I could even swap one usb for at least 1 fw400 then I would be happy. Since I can't, I am sticking with the last gen for now.

My 2 cents.

I feel the same way, Their laptops are getting worse in Connectivity. They lost the DVI port as well, there is a mini-port but still kind of a drag...

The biggest drag is how good all the Hardware inside is! If it had 1 E-sata port it would be amazing.

I use 2 fw ports and the express port on every job. I could squeak by with 1 800 port and the express port... but who wants that.

I really wish that some good hardware maker (like Sonnet or CalDigit) would give us an ExpressCard-34 that provided one port-multiplier capable eSATA port and one FW800 port. I've told the guys at CalDigit. I've emailed the suggestion to Sonnet and others. Entirely do-able, and I bet it would sell like crazy.

When you have Two Red Drives (2 Cameras), it gets harder to connect them and triple check them before they are Dupped, Logged, Mag cleared and sent back to Camera dept.

I'd like an e-sata + FW800 or 400 expresscard, it would work really well for a 4 or 5 Bay JBOD enclosure, and Delivery to Editorial on 3.5" Sata Drive. It would make a 3-4 Camera setup easier to achieve with only one laptop and 1 DIT. Being able to connect a 2nd fw 800, having 2 Red Drives connected on separate buses makes you almost twice as fast.

Have you ever mounted two RED DRIVES on the same computer at the same time?

In my experience it's fun.

There is a cable with a FW600 one one extreme, and a FW400 on the other extreme... It easily allows you to use the FW800 with FW400 equipment.:innocent:

My two cents, too.

Yes I have those, but I am restricted to the fw400's speed. Also that doesn't help with the new MBP's which don't even have a second fw port at all.

There is always the possibility to use the express card slot to add FW400 or eSATA ports. I mean, I also did not like it at the beginning, but the technology is moving away from 400, so this is kind of "growing pain", if you know what I mean...:waaa:

yep, looks like it's not for you. I'm sure they'll still sell like hotcakes

I'm betting there isn't a high enough number of users that use MBP in such a manner to make it cost effective for them. If 99.5% of all customers don't use both FW ports in addition to the expresscard then why continue to build the machines that way?

To me more Q? as decisions will have to be made as far as the wordiness of the extra 4GB for $1,200? And of course the SSD drives, would it be really a good buy or they would just be an extravaganza better not to make ?

We obviously want the fastest computer we can get, especially for me as to get back on the road I'll have to sale my tower and one of the 30" cinema displays for it! But with the beginning of the filming of my Movie, and the fact that the MBP will be also my desktop were I will make heavy use of applications such as CS4, Painter X and LightRoom, all Photography related uses, but with pictures coming form my 1Ds III at an average of over 20MP per pictures and coming to about 120MB Tiff files, I need to make sure I don't under buy the spects on this MBP which will likely be my only computer for at list a year.

Ketch,

I will not waist money on buying memory directly from them. You can find same memory way cheaper via internet from another suppliers...

SSD: Great commodity, we we have lived without them until now, so I do not see it as a necessity...

Just another 2 cents...:)

Never buy RAM or extra HD's from Apple, the mark up is unchecked.

I am not knocking the new MBP, just publicly complaining how the new shiny thing wont work for me.

I don't want a fw400 port, but I want extra USB's even less. Any way I can get it I would like two fw connections PLUS the express port. I already use the express port to add 2 eSATA connections.

It's true this and even video professionals are a tiny subset of the market, there is no sense building it "for" me.

I wonder if I could mod it though............

Yes in did new technology is always expensive, but as a long term investment, and for soly PRO work I need to get the best I can get to get the jobs done, also this will not be paired with a Mac Pro in the Studio, this will be my Mac Pro :)

The memory it has been an issue before with my Tower, as we had to take out the original MAC memory, as different brands of memory don't seem to like each other, with that of Apple.

:construction: Also would the 2.66 upgrade for $300 to the 2.93GHz be of any visible results at work?

I'd use a FW800 box to ingest from CF cards (there are really fast ones) and an Express-card adaptor with e-SATA. You can either connect a box with fast swapping bare drives for backup or a small RAID for rough cuts. Even modern USB drives are OK for backups.

I don't miss FW400 very much, but the DVI.

BTW, in my experience RR/REDLine profits more from max RAM than from max clock.
