  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

new 2000nit 7" monitor under $1k

Hello Constantine,

Are you speaking about the Portkey monitor (or the BM7)? Do you have a Portkey?

Pat

Yes I do. we got this last year. It looks 100% identical with the one that started this thread but mine was stated 1700 NITS on the specs. When we measured it it was just under 1100 nits. I dont have any serious reflection probs, and I live in GR go figure, all you do is use a hood correctly and its fine. No fan issues either. The monitor is a very basic function daybright. I wrote to the company I bought it from about the wrong specs stated , and they say they will look into it, and even asked me if I want to send it back and wait until is resolved. I didnt bther because it works ok and I have bad experience with stuff going back and fore in the past dealing with chinese companies. This one looks to be a new version though everything apart of the 2k nits specs looks to be the same in all specs. Regards.

The funny thing with specs is that it's not a scientific fact, or facts... ?

In their Product PDF Ikan writes :
The SX7 is viewable in even the brightest conditions with its super bright 1700 nit LCD panel.
and later on the same data sheet :
2000 nit super high bright LCD panel

So figure out, it's up to you I suppose. ;-) Good that other engeneers don't play with numbers.

Greatings Constantine.

Pat

Yes well thats what you mostly get from a lot of chinese companies, they dont seem to...care much about specs accurate statements... however I wish mine was anywhere close to 1700 Nits lol. Its 1100 at its best. Still viewable in daylight and better work with a hood but....a bummer for accurate statements lol. But hey its cheap hahaha

I'm curious, why such a negative attitude regarding Chinese companies? You certainly seem to have an agenda in your 5 pages of posts over this monitor.
I think perhaps you should ask to return for a current model perhaps.

I ask because my personal experience with this monitor is mostly a positive one and do not match the claims you make.
I was just on set outdoor bright sunlight. The DP's on camera monitor being a Small HD 702 bright, hard to see without a hood.
I was pulling focus on the Portkeys BM7 with NO hood in bright direct sunlight and had NO trouble at all clearly seeing the image and
doing my job of keeping sharps.
I don't give a f$%k what the specs are that they publish, simple fact is it works better then any other I've tried.

This monitor seems like a great ac / focus monitor that can be used outside and it's NOT expensive.
How is this negative in any way?

Curtis, let me start with this- First of all you dont need to attack me,talking about agentas and such, Im a user too. This is my experience with it and my dollars is as good as yours , Im emtitle to write my experience even if you like it or not.

Secondly I didnt say this about all chinese companies I said SOME CHINESE COMPANIES and as an engineer I have experienced this many times in the past buying products and testing them for my own use. Again this is my experience it doesnt have to match yours and my posts always left a space for mine being just a faulty monitor. No matter what I didnt get one down to specs and that is a fact I can share. I actually said that even at 1100 Nits its a good steal for the money and worth buying.

Perhaps you are reading my posts in a negative way fo rsome reason.

My use is mostly steadicam and all I care is have a daybright with reasonable framing so I can pull my shots. Things like analysis and other specs do not worry me. But hey .
Chris seemed to have way more problems in his review than I do, I didnt see you asking the reason why?

Anyhow perhaps you should read a little more open minded, I also said that the comany who sold this t me responted when I asked fr the reason not being as bright as specified and offered me to send it back. And I also said that becase this is a cheap back up and I have bad experience in waiting for a long time for cases le those to be resolved I decided to keep it cause it does the job I want it to do.

End of story. Have a nice day.

Hello Curtis,
How do you feel that the sound of the fans is an issue or not for theatrical work? Features.
Do you use it handhelded or on a tripod?
What bag do you use?

Thanks

Pat

Constantine,
I didn't mean to come off so confrontational, wasn't my intent.
Was my intent to try and figure out why we have such different experiences, that's all.
I think in essence we agree, for the price it's a good deal.

I've been through several monitors trying to find something that could
offer a clear enough image outdoor in bright sunlight to pull focus on,
and this is the first I've found to do the job and it's darn cheap.

Pat, the fans are loud when the monitor is on it's brightest setting.
However I can't imaging using the high bright setting inside where sound would be a bigger issue.
Outside if you're shooting dialog in a quiet set and you have the monitor on high bright,
yes I think it's an issue. You then would need to be far enough away from talent & mics to avoid an issue.

I used it on a few sets now and haven't had a sound issue but I did make minor adjustments to how I work to avoid them.
The inside narrative project I ran the monitor on it's low brightness setting to keep fan speeds down.
It was no louder then my Helium fans when recording but I did keep it farther away from talent then the camera.

The only other monitor I've seen that is this bright in direct sunlight it the smallhd ultra bright and it's $2900.
This monitor is literally $2,000 less expensive and solves the same issue I needed resolved.
That's why I posted it here because I thought it would help others in our community.

Curtis no problem. I just wanted you to understand that Im not negative. But specs in many chinese products do vary a lot and that might be a case. For example mine has no problem with getting hot and I can hardly hear the fan, and it doesnt get hot either. Mightit be that its an older model with less brightness? no idea. cheers.
