  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

NEW 1024x768 HD Monitor

Can we have de-anamorphized monitoring from a 2:1 anamorphics lens?

Mr. Orange,
if you look at the aspec ratios you'll find:
Aspect Size: 4:3, 16:9, 16:10, 2.35:1, 2:1, 1:1
When I have my HVX and I change the ratio to 2.35:1 (I think also for 2:1) the picture gets squished down and seemes stretched. So if you have Anamorphized footage coming out of the camera, and set the monitor to that aspect ratio, I would think it gets de-anamorphized. No way to really tell unless I got someone in LA with anamorphized footage. (I like to test things out before I can give a definite YES)

Any update from your tests on subject?

Thanks.

Hey Mr. Orange,

Still haven't tested with anamorphized footage, I need someone in LA that has a camera with that output and I would be happy to test it. Also I'm going to show my products at an HVX meeting on:

December 15th 12pm-4pm at 3720 Wrightwood Dr., Studio City, CA 91604.

Please contact DVXuser "DC" or post on the thread to let him know how many people are coming. Hope to see you there.

Hey guys,
Just an update. Tested the Monitor with 2 HVXbatteries (panasonic) and I got 5hrs 20mins running time. Thought you might want to know, for those who also own the HVX and batteries for it. :)

hey,
My monitor will be at the Redrock booth tomorrow 12/5 and 12/6 at DV Expo in Burbank California. It should be the prototype and if everything goes right I might even have the production model with the new custom buttons.
Please go take a look and see how bright, sharp it is and its great viewing angle.
I should also be there in case people want to meet, just PM me.

Hello siniarch

How is it going with your monitor wich looks very promising?

Any new feed back, somebody?
I'll be looking for something similar pretty soon.

Emmanuel

Hi Emanuel,
Thanks for asking. The monitor is going well. I'm sorry I haven't posted about it here. I usually post on DVXuser. You can follow the post at:
http://www.dvxuser.com/V6/showthread.php?t=111093&page=5

Just to recap, DV expo went well, I have a few distributors (rental houses in LA) interested in becoming re-sellers, but I'm not sure if I'll go that route.

I also showed it a the HVXuser meeting on dec. 15th in Los Angeles, and again people loved it. :)

I'm getting it mentioned in an article by Ned Soltz of DV magazine in February. He also loved it.

And this Past Wed. Dec. 19th I was at the Mole Richardson Studios doing a short film with the RedRock M2 and the New Sony EX1 camera. Apparently, sony and RR want to show this at Sundance. You can read about that and see pictures of the set at the DVXuser thread above.

So far so good. I'm still selling it at introductory prices, but that will soon change. If you have any questions, please feel free to ask.

Thanks and Happy Holidays!!!!

Luis

will you have more meetings soon?..

What is the current consumption of the monitor? If planning on powering the unit from the RED AUX pwr, this port can only supply 1.5A through a current limiter. You would not want to run much more than 1A to be on the safe side of the CL still runing cool and not shutting down.

The DC in is it a 2.1 or 2.5 mm? This is an excellent feature packed monitor. Only curious as to the placement of the connectors across the top as opposed to rear mounting. Would this not cause undue stress and possible premature cable failure from a tighter bend radius? Also raises the profile of the monitor.

Jim,

Yes, we should have another meeting early spring. :) If you like, send me a PM with your info and I'll be sure to keep you updated.

Pana-tech,

I have to run some test on this. As far as I know I've had it powered by a 1A 12volt power source just fine, but then I bought some AC Adapters that were rated 1A at 12 volts and they didn't work. for some reason I think they were .8A rather than the advertised 1A?

Also the DC in is 5.5 od and 2.5 id.

The placement of the connectors is on top because of the format of the components. It wasn't feasible to do it on the back of the unit. While this does increase the profile with the cables, also note that the unit has an image flip function in the menu. if its a big issue for someone, they can just mount it upside down and flip the image in the menus. I also found it better on the top because I can see where I'm mounting the cables to. As far as premature cable failure, it is an issue that is difficult for me to test. I can only assume that if the cable is quality built then it should be ok.

I just posted this update in DVXuser, but I thought I'd update you guys here.
Also I did a shoot with a red a week ago and we used my monitor both with hd-sdi and with HDMI. worked out great I'll get some photos up when I'm allowed. :)
-------------------------------------------------------------------------
Hey Guys,
I know this thread has been a little slow lately. Just trying to deliver on the initial orders and fight it out with the mnf.

So here is the update:
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I've started to get emails back from the first batch of users letting me know how much they like their CARRION. this makes me happy.
Some have put it side to side with other competitors and they can clearly see the difference in
  • brightness
  • color rendition
  • angle of view and
  • Resolution
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
On another note, if you haven't noticed, the introductory price is no longer available.
Sorry, but in order to stay in business so that I can support my customers and future customers, I do have to make a little bit of money. In order to soften the blow on the increase in price, I'm providing the following upgrade to those who buy at regular price:
  • New Anti-Reflective Coating which will:
    • Make the screen slightly brighter at 400nits
    • Make the screen better under Sunny conditions
    • and in my opinion Sharper.
Don't get me wrong, the screen is amazing without this new coating but I thought it would be a nice addition for those taking the plunge at the new price.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
And for those who adopted early, I will be providing an upgrade to this new coating if you desire for a price of course. But much less than the difference between the introductory price and the regular price. If you are interested, please e-mail me. (I will be sending an email soon to you guys to let you know about the offer)
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I will also be making the remote control unit available on the web site. At first I thought it was not a good add-on, but after having to flip through the menus and adjust many different units. I've found that the remote control really speeds up setup and going through the menus. And you don't have to be that close to the monitor to set it up.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Thank you again for all those who have contributed to this project, with thoughts and ideas and even good wishes.
And THANK YOU SO MUCH to those that have order a unit. I hope that it is helping you produce the best independent film projects you can produce.

Ok. here is one of the photos. This is my Prototype unit so it doesn't have the battery plate capabilities, hence the Velcro. Also it has the old buttons.

What I do is just Velcro the battery plate to it. for this shoot we wanted more weight in the back since it was all handheld so we used the tekkeon battery you see there. I will also be providing a power tap cable that will go from a red battery plate to my monitor. So the Red Bricks will power both camera and monitor.

Also, first day we had the hd-sdi from the camera to my monitor and then to a video village. Second day we did without the video village because the director thought it was fine to just look through my monitor and the connection of the hd-sdi on the camera was intermittent. So here you see it with the HDMI to DVI cable. Works like a charm.

Man what a pleasure and honor to be working with this camera. I'm so jealous of all you guys with one. :D

If you have any questions feel free to ask.

Hey Guys,
I just tested last night with #81 and YES, the monitor displays the HDMI out with all the menus and you can even see the zebra. Wohoooo!!!

Big Thanks to Sam Druckerman. (great guy and I would really recommend renting from him.)

Does anyone know if you can buy any of the small LCD on camera monitors (6" to 8") consumer style with a HDMI input on it? I assume alot of them would be 12volt as well. As the HDSDI models are just so expensive for a AC monitor.

Not sure Finner,

but also be aware that many of the consumer monitor do not have high definition screens (edit: by high definition I don't mean pixel by pixel. I'm saying most will have 640x480 resolution, the more expensive ones will have 800x480, but I'm not aware of any consumer monitor with 1024x768 like mine. I believe there are only 2-3 companies providing this resolution at this size and they are usually prized between 4k-5k per monitor) hence they are priced cheaper. Also as Barry Green stated on another post,
http://www.reduser.net/forum/showthread.php?t=8866

the Red can output both 1280x720 (standard 720p definition) and 1280x848 (non-standard 720p def). the latter has more vertical pixels that allow you to view the menu items.

Some Monitors cannot handle the Non-Standard input and I'm guessing consumer monitors could not handle it. But you would have to test them individualy before making that decision.

That's why I posted that my monitor "the CARRION" CAN handle the 1280x848 input. and you can see all the menu items and such. this is great news because now you only need one monitor. :)

Hi siniarch,

Asked this somewhere else, but figure it's probably best from the horses mouth!...

What is the situation with the HS-SDI versions of the Carrion and 1280x848? I'm guessing the HD-SDI stream can only give you 1280x720, but does the HD-SDI model also have the HDMI port, and if so presumably they're switchable? I'm envisaging running both HD-SDI and HDMI to the Carrion, and being able to switch between overlays and a clean signal.

Also, what about HD-SDI pass-through - will this still happen if I'm in HDMI mode, so that I can loop out signals for video village and still see menus on the camera LCD?

Before you ask, the main reason I'm interested in the HD-SDI part of the equation is that experience tells me that consumer connections like HDMI aren't very robust, and cables tend to fall out and generally be annoying, so for monitoring during takes I'd like to be cabled in via BNCs, but I'd still like to be able to use a single monitor and get menu views...

Hi Dominic,

the HD-SDI output of the Red, I don't believe is able to output 1280x848 so the menus are not visible. :(

All the models of "the Carrion" have HDMI (its really DVI input but a simple cable $50 will go from HDMI to DVI same signal) That is one of the great things about this monitor. All the inputs are there. You don't have to choose between HD-SDI or Component RGB. you get both. :)

I don't believe you get pass through from HDMI to HD-SDI. (this I believe is true with most all monitors. In order for the pass through to work, you have to feed it that input)

what you could do is have both cables connected HDMI and HD-SDI out of your Red to the Carrion. then switch to HDMI to change the menu (video village would loose signal) then switch back to HD-SDI (video village gains signal)

With no Video Village, I think you will be hard press to find the difference between the HDMI and the HD-SDI outputs. Also if I'm not mistaken last time I checked the RED does not output zebras on HD-SDI, unless they changed that with a new bios?

Its been my experience that the HDMI has been very stable both on my monitor and on the RED so I wouldn't worry about that. But either way you have both options. :)

Top stuff, cheers mate - I was originally planning on getting a Carrion B, then thought I might have to opt for the Red LCD simply for menus etc, so you just made yourself a sale (or remade it, if you want to get technical)!

Are they available now? My Red should ship in the next few weeks, so obviously in an ideal world I'd order both at the same time...

lead time is 3-5 weeks. Until I get off the ground I won't be able to keep stock of a bunch of units.I've already have about 45 units of some of the components that take the longest (ie. metal enclosures) to make. But the guts of the units are expensive and since I don't make that much I can't afford to order a bunch.I'm hoping this will change in the future. but now its a little slower than I'd like.
