Anyone have any luck building their own network storage device to share footage with multiple PR CC work stations? I know AVID was really locked down when it came to third party devices, but it seems like you could piece one together pretty easy on your own for adobe.

or am I totally wrong?

This has been talked about numerous times, from what I can recall, the answer is -
1- If you are technically capable and don't mind lots of setup and troubleshooting, yes you can build one yourself. No external tech support, warranties limited to components. Cheaper, maybe.
2- If you aren't computer savvy and don't want to/have the time to setup and troubleshoot, go with one of the plethora of prebuilt options out there. Hundreds of choices, from economical smaller systems to large full production house versions.

Also depends on how much space you need, and how are you going to access it? Smaller 12tb network appliance via gigabit ethernet, or 64tb shared 10gb over fiber?

I would suggest to determine your needs first, and leave room to grow. Then you can look at systems. Or if you have a budget start there. Knocking together something might be easy for one person and impossible for another. For our prod house, we have 3 macpro workstations tied into a Facilis 48tb raid via 8gb fiber. We also just procured a GB Labs SPACE shared storage device that is 64tb shared over 10gb e-net over fiber. There are things that are awesome and that suck about each one. We are trying to retire the facilis and move to the SPACE, but there are ongoing bugs with that unit that are still being resolved, so we can't make the jump yet.

Thanks for the heads up. I looked at Facilis, but way too pricey for a two person operation. My brother in law is a computer savant, so I am in good hands there. we are going to start with gigabit ethernet and work our way up from there.

I just hooked up a Synology 1812+ in Raid 6. I'm getting around 80Mb - 110MB Read/Write over a 1 gb network. I have not tried editing off of it though just compositing. So far so good and the setup was not too crazy at all.

The new 1813+ allows you to team 4 ports. If you did a Raid 10 setup along with making sure you have 2 ethernet ports teamed on your computer I'm sure that would be more than enough to get a couple editing machines working on
