Trailer Here:

Looks beautiful. Wonder if it was shot on Red as most of Netflix's shows have. IMDB lists no tech specs and I can't find anything about what it was shot on. Looks great either way. Can anyone confirm if this is another Red show?

Hm, wierd, BTS shots show ARRI 16mm cameras? Looks like there is a digital camera on set as well but I can't tell what it is.

Most British Productions are Alexa so I'm going to say that this is probably not a Red shoot. Also the series DP has used Alexa on his last few gigs so probably not shot on Dragon. Too bad.

Well, i guess it proves the point that it isn't necessarily just the camera as either way you felt it was beautiful. :-)

Definitely true. I thought The Danish Girl was breathtakingly beautiful while Into the Badlands looked like shit. Both RED. Go figure. I guess the camera isn't magic after all. LOL

This is a Netflix production, right? Doesn't that mean Alexa is banned due to non-native 4K. It might be something else than Red that shoots 4K, but for Netflix own productions Red has been the choice except for Bloodline which I know was shot Sony. But if "The Crown" is indeed shot on Alexa, that's a weird step for Netflix against their earlier policy.

However, it looks like Red, not Alexa.

Marco Polo is also shot on Sony, I believe. Beautiful show.

Yeah, even if it isn't a F65, I still think Sony is one of the three major camera systems to choose from when in production. Outside of that the Panavision, but it's more niché.

That is not accurate. Among Netflix productions shot using other cameras as the primary camera are Sense8 (Sony F55), Wet Hot American Summer (Sony F55), Grace and Frankie (Canon C300 MkII), and a number of others that I'm spacing on at the moment. A number of Netflix productions have been on Red, but a significant number have not. It's the same story with Amazon, but Amazon is not as rigid in its 4K origination demands (it is for delivery, but not for origination).

Well, major productions like House of Cards, Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Luke Cage, The Get Down and so on have all been shot on Red. Didn't say that it's exclusive Red, but the most widely known Netflix productions have been choosing Red as their format. The main thing though is that in the question of The Crown being shot on Alexa or Red, it's not Alexa. It might be something else, but it's probably shot on Red. The colors feels like it, but it could possibly have been shot on Sony as well. But if it's Alexa, then that would go against previous policies from Netflix about their native 4K approach.

IMHO, there's no point in shooting a camera like a RED if you're going to be heavy-handed with the coloring afterwards. I have seen the trailer for this show and I look forward to seeing it eventually. However, I don't appreciate 'literal' coloring, as in, "Hey, it's the '50s, let's smother it with Instagram filters. Warp 5." I wonder how the DP feels about it.

Actually one shot in the trailer does not work (the coronation shot in Westminster Abbey, which feels like it was shot in a tool shed), though overall it looks terrific. I love the mid-20th century in almost every way, including the Cold War.

was actually all shot on the Sony F55, some bits shot on film for achive look. My friends the vfx sup. I think it looks great.

Marc, thanks for that. The F55 looks like a mean camera. Seems that Netflix isn't messing around when they say that they want a 4K minimum, although that rules out 16mm for good. Got any idea about the lenses?

GOT IT! Could this be the first Panavision DXL series?? it makes sense because I thought this looked like RED footage. ;)

Panavised F55s though? Looks like a Sony EVF though and if the vfx super says F55, that's what it is.

I assume it was shot RAW though? Again difficult to see the rigging.

Whatever it is, it's beautifully lit and shot, bit too much hazing for my liking but at least the shadows are not crushed and there's lots of depth in there.

cheers
Paul
