My editor and I are trying to figure out a workflow. We're cutting on an older avid (I don't know the model) and will have access to a nitrus in two weeks when the company he works for recieves them, so we can do a 4k output when we're done on the nitrus.

Now, our dilemma is that we're trying to figure out how to cut on low res sd files on his older machine, but still have the ability to reconform and finish with a 4k project. Our final output master will probably be like a d5 or something (haven't given it much thought yet). Can anyone suggest a workflow that we should consider? Thanks in advance

I assume you mean a DS Nitris?

To be honest, I don't know. Is the DS the only one that can work with red? Is there anything you would suggest if I didn't have access to a DS then, but I want a 4k master? Am I stuck going to another editing platform?

DS is the only Avid product that works in 2K, 4K, etc.

thanks michael, I just talked to someone, and figured out that I can use red rushes, or metafuze to make smaller files for an offline. I realized in talking to him what a noob question this was. I guess my only option is to rent a DS suite for a reconform at the end. Any other thoughts?

The offline worlflow is defined in the step by step guide on www.avid.com/red

You can online almost anywhere depending on where you go. If you have a complex timeline, then a DS conform via AFE will preserve your layers, titles, VFX, etc.

Thank you Michael, I found out that we will be finishing on a DS. I think we've figured it out now. I appreciate the help.
