  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Need to Travel with my 6 RedBricks from NY to Munich

I went to Frankfurt with 8 RED Bricks in june last year.

All 8 got confiscated and destroyed.

In all fairness the gap was around 4 weeks from confiscated to destroyed. Apparently the best thing to do is contact your carrier and ask them what is best practice. I spent a futile month on the phone to german customs to no avail!

Wow, what was their justification for seizing and destroying them?

Why you didnt back off from the flight and fedexed it?

Wow, that's crazy. I always check in my bricks and have never had a problem, US, UK or Germany.

The rules are very clear, Red Bricks are classified as dangerous goods & may not be transpotred in the hold of a passanger jet. The fine is up to $250,000. 3 batteries may be carried in hand luggage if 1 is fitted to the camera, the other ones need to have the terminals taped up.

Take a look at the reason why !

They burn out of control, they are too hot for an aircraft fire extiguisher to have any effect, the heat will melt the plane!

Reason I didnt just not get on the flight is that I had no Idea I had a problem until I landed back in Dubai!

I even paid excess baggage to get the flight case on my flight!

Came into germany from Dubai no problem, (well I had to pay a deposit before my gear got released to me for use) and I even asked them if there was any specific action I needed to take on the way out!

First and only time I have taken the RED batteries to a country outside of the GCC (Qatar, Dubai, Bahrain, etc etc)

I now only travel with the IDX enduras. They are travel safe, unlike the 140WH reds.

Rest in Peace, little buddies, rest in peace.

We had a Fedex (I bleieve) plane crash here last year due to batteries exploding midflight.

Good day , I know that there is some regulation regarding batteries inc Red Bricks . Can i travel with 6 Red Brick in Luggage ?
Is this regulation only in US ? will i have problems in Munich also ?

Go to this link. It will help solve most of the queries about traveling with the batteries.

I would recommend carrying the print out for the same. It will help you to answer an overzealous officer at the airport.

I keep hearing about this law, but TSA and airlines seem to be fine with batteries being checked in. What gives?
Ive been flying and checking in larger capacity batteries for many years without a word from anyone.

You've just been lucky. The regulations mean that you are taking a chance every time you fly with your larger capacity batteries checked that they will be seized. Also there is a chance, albeit very small, that they do actually cause a fire in the hold - then what?

Then, the plane goes down in flames we all die.

You can take the batteries as carry-on - spread them out around your crew.

Best is to ship them ahead, or rent them locally. How much can battery rental be? Not much.
