Need to Learn Lighting

[John Snelson]

I work in sports and have neglected to learn lighting because everything is so documentary, but I need to learn lighting now. Hope to make my interviews look great and learn all aspects of lighting.

What are the best resources for me? Is there a must read book? Any advice is appreciated!

Read "Film Lighting" by Malkiewicz, study the paintings of Rembrandt, Vermeer, Sargent, Caravaggio, Hopper for starters...

David is always incredibly generous with thoughtful advice (all from a top flight DP).. and it goes without saying you should follow the advice above (actaully why not read all film books on lighting as there isn't that many?)

However I suspect if you mainly want to light intervews it may be easier to try and assist somebody who does this very well. It is actually quite easy to be ok at it ...but to be ok at it is still a little nuanced and developing your eye here may be better done with somebody guiding you..

just a thought...
