Ok, either I'm completely inept, or the search function of this forum needs a tweak, as search terms of a certain length won't go through. I've been trying to find samples of footage shot with the Red 18-85 zoom. Unfortunately, searching "18-85" just returns "Please try some different terms".

As Vimeo and Youtube aren't yielding anything, I'm hoping some kind folks here can help me out. I know I've seen a music video shot almost entirely with the zoom, but I can't find it!

Cheers and thanks!

Ah, thank your very much, Martin. Let's hope the next version improves on the function. This will certainly do in the meantime!

As I don't want to go reviving old dead threads all over the place, i was hoping to hear some thoughts on the bokeh of the 18-85.

A while back, I read a review of the lens by Matt Uhry comparing it against the Cooke 18-100. I was pleased with the results of the review, but the screenshots of the OOF Highlights gave me pause. They appeared to be sort of donut shaped, which I have to say didn't thrill me.

I just had a look at another thread here which has a screenshot with much more pleasing OOF highlights. So I'm wondering- do they change shape dramatically between stops, or could this have been a QC/manufacturing issue with earlier versions of the lens?

I'm downloading all the footage I can find from the lens, but in the meantime, does anyone have a thought to share on the OOF highlights? Looking your way Mr Rossi!

Cheers!

He he, unfortunately Ryan, most of what we shot with the 18-85 were tests, most of them to see how the 18-85 behaved at almost a macroscopic level in the Pincushion and Barrel distortions when zooming, it is well known that Zooms do not ever compare in a fair way to primes.

Our main interest for the test were and still are for shooting S3D, were two exact zooms are to be used, and when this are synchronized to the absolute closet possible fraction of millimeter of matching movement, you need to run tests as we did.

So long story short NO footage, this is the bad news, the good news is not one but many, the Red Pro Zoom 18-85 is by far one of the best if not the best zoom I ever used, built like a thank, and a bit heavy and large, but IQ is incredible, and very well suited for our tests.

To give you an idea, all zooms internal components do not move at a exact strait line but kinda of wable their way in and out as they zoo from their minimum focal to their maximum, Red's 18-85 has a much easier to match movement then expected, what I means is that there is absolutely no way to find two zooms of the same exact manufacturer and same kind to zoom in and out with the same exact movement, so in 3D this have to be matched in post, the greater the difference of this disparity the more work in post, Red passed the tests with flying Colors, again incredible build and IQ.

So if you are looking in to getting one of this Beautiful beasts, don't think it over get it, and thank me later, he he, just if you can get your hands on one first, it is a large lens, and the size is do to the great build and speed, for me after I played with the Master Zoom from Arri/Zeiss no lens is too big, he he.

As for the Bokeh is very smooth, amongst my favorite, and if you have seen some of the 1.2 shots I have of my girls you know that I like really Shallow DOF, but not always, some times I like to get at list the all face in focus, he he, but still have a great BG out of focus area, and the 18-85 was very nice at it, again during the tests we were not interested in shooting WO, but we did tested just the same, as for 3D we were looking from T4 to T8.

Possibly immediately after CES we might use the 18-85 on a series of Commercials with Gibby and Richard, not sure, as we might use Gibby's camera as Hybrid very dynamic and the second R1 could be used with an extreme long lens, so not PL, but if we do decide on PL then we could shoot the 18-85, if we do, I'll let you know, but that footage will be under NDA till released, so you will have to wait till end of the month for it, agin if we do use it.

Thanks Ketch! I think we can call this a ringing endorsement for the lens. I appreciate you taking the time to respond so thoroughly!
