  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Hello,

I am in the works of building a new work PC for my new Epic-W that's on the way. I am familiar with RED files, as I have owned the Epic-X. I have done most of my work from home on my gaming PC this past few years, as well as working off a gaming laptop with a Lacie rugged RAID & Lacie 4Big 24TB (USB3).

But now I need to take things to the next level as I am being held up with footage, render times, etc.

I am quite familiar with building PC's as I have done it growing up to satisfy my gaming hobby, so building this new PC wont be a problem as I am 95% knowledgeable of what I need to put into it, but obviously willing to take any and all advice.

Where I am really having a hard time grasping is the RAID, I/O setup, and what the best options are.

The questions and direction I need are:

1) Do I go with a pre built plug and play RAID (Lacie, G-Tech, etc), I am aiming for around 48TB to start

2) What connections should I aim to get, I am seeing all this new USB 3.1, USB-C, Thunderbolt 2, Thunderbolt 3 (I have somewhat figured out that this is my bottleneck)

3) From my limited knowledge in this area, USB-C is the slowest and TB3 is the fastest? Now why wouldn't I go with TB3?

4) Are PC's very TB2/3 friendly at all? Can I find good motherboards that will support these connections? Or is USB-C my only option?

5) RAID controllers / Cards? Do I need one?

Money isn't too big of an issue, as I am building this machine for work and it will be my main station that all of my projects go through.

Nothing has been purchased yet, but I have a rough idea of what I need:

CPU - i7 6900K 3.2ghz (8core) OR i7 6850K 3.6ghz (6core) - The price is substantially different, would the 8 core be overkill? or no?
GFX - 1080TI - do I need two? I don't do a ton of color grading, but wouldn't mind getting there over the next couple of years
RAM - As much as I need (64GB to start I am assuming)
OS SSD - 256GB
Cache SSD - 1TB
PSU - 1000 - 1250W
Motherboard - This is where I am a little confused, as my decision comes down to the I/O for my disks

Basically to sum it up, I just need some advice on an efficient setup to effectively cut through 8K RED footage without painfully waiting on disks, etc.

Thanks in advance for all the advice.

Cory
