  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Need new hosting / email provider -- suggestions?

I've been happy with http://gandi.net/

They are rock solid and you get exactly what you pay for.. none of that "unlimited bandwidth, unlimited disk space" BS.

Google Premium is great for e-mail, especially with the message archival and customizable message filtering, but it can get expensive with a lot of users.

Thanks for all the suggestions everyone. I have had several PM's and emails too. It seems that people overwhelmingly suggest Google for email. I'm converting one of my domains over to google now to give it a try.

To address Eric and others suggesting colocation or similar solutions, I've done that and of course it offers the most control. Most of my problem now is that I once did a lot of site design and hosting myself. I still have a handful of clients who I now serve in other capacities, but they still place a lot of their trust in me for managing their hosting, email, occasional site upgrades, etc.. I'm not really in a position these days to go the co-located route or to manage servers, keep software and security up to date, etc.. If it weren't for keeping a few of these clients around for other things, I would've handed them their web sites and wished them good luck a long time ago.

MediaTemple has been meeting our bandwidth requirements just fine, their service offerings have been a perfect fit, it's just their response time to issues has been unacceptable as of late. The email is obviously another issue as that seems to be a problem everywhere we look. There don't seem to be many, if any, hosting providers out there who offer the level of robust email we're looking for. Google looks promising for that. Back on the MediaTemple thing, they resolved the issue and my client is OK with the outcome and we're going to sit tight for the moment. I've been talking back and forth with MT over this and a few recent glitches. They recently re-did their entire email infrastructure in an attempt to greatly improve it. However, we have seen no improvement on the user end of things, in fact it's worse than ever. They are aware of this. One of the MT guys also recommended I move to Google for email. Hey, gotta give props to them for being honest and admitting their weakness.

Looks like Rackspace is most likely where we'll move next, but I'm hoping MT can find a way to take care of us.

Stephen, I ran Exhange back when I had my own co-located servers. Yeah, it just worked, you're right. If the Google thing doesn't pan out, we'll probably go the Exchange route -- there are several providers out there where that's all they do. It will be costly, but in the end, will be worth it. Google is so cheap, I hope it works out. :)

I am very pleased with GoDaddy and Gmail.

Add me to the Google mail hosting with my existing domain. Was with Yahoo but their mail started failing and they couldn't care less. Google have been brilliant. They have some fantastic apps for keeping Outlook seamlessly sync'd and their tech support so far has been flawless.

Jeff, I use Hostgator (http://hostgator.com) for our web development business (my after hours job) ...I've had a reseller account with over 50 sites on shared and dedicated servers...rarely had any problems, and when I do, Hostgator Support is very responsive. Great prices too....highly recommend them.

+1 worked with it for the longest time, they are real good.

great stuff, i have been running 40 email addresses using google apps for 3+ years. Never a hitch.

Is there any forums, website that lists or rates providers, I think we all face this at times?
