On set right now and am needing to see TV transmit box on the lcd.

Our impression is that the TV safe box is roughly 10% smaller than the actual transmission dimensions would be. As a result, our DP is seeing the TV transmit box on his Panasonic monitors while the camera ops are seeing slightly smaller tv safe boxes on their lcd/evf screens.

Is the only option to do something custom in the monitor menu or is there another option that I'm not aware of?

Regards,

Paul

Do you have title or action safe enabled? Or both?

What you may be seeing is simply an under/overscan issue.

Transmitted relates to film negative, I'm not sure it's important for digital cos if you deliver a 1080 product isn't it a 1080 transmission?

We're shooting 16:9 but needing to protect 4:3.

Because most people today with 4:3 tvs still have a flat screen or lcd tv, in which case the action safe box is smaller than it needs to be--the DP wants to see the larger transmitted 4:3 frame (not just the smaller "safe" box).

I've tried getting custom settings to take hold but they don't seem to work. Has anybody really gotten the custom frame guides to work correctly?

I shoot a framing chart then tape the monitor to the safe areas with thin painters tape? I thought that would be std practice.

It'd be much more elegant to be able to upload framelines, don't you think?

I setup a 3:1 frame guide this past week and it works fine. Don't have the camera close at hand at the moment, but seems like there was a 4:3 already configured in the custom setup, but I could be wrong.

Its hard to get tape in the EVF.

the 4:3 in the RED menus is 4:3 safe not 4:3 transmit...so the box ends up being shorter vertically than the 16:9 recorded image. We want a 4:3 box that shares the top and bottom lines of the 16:9 recorded image...

Thanks for trying to help here... my sense is that this is not possible.

You can customise frame guides to your heart's content in camera. Have a look in the manual or just go into Custom Guides and play around. It can definitely be done.
