CONTEXT:
Hey guys, been shooting for years on the BMD cameras incl the original 12K. I have 5 EF mount zoom lenses that work for Super35 sensors. That’s what I have. What I’m wanting to do is shoot a docu-drama, probably 6K anamorphic. I would shoot 8K only when doing green screen virtual production as it allows me to push in more in post. Since the lenses are EF, whichever camera I get Im looking at the KipperTie RF to EF ND Revolva Adpater/Filter.
That Said, here are my thoughts/questions that I need help sorting out:
QUESTIONS:
1. I understand if I get the Raptor-VV, I can use all my existing lenses but only at 6K resolutions and below. Also that I cannot shoot anamorphic at 6K and below, but only at 8K. Does that sound right?
2. If true, what are the differences or trade-offs between shooting 6K cropped on the Raptor-VV vs shooting 8K using the full sensor on the Raptor S35? Any image quality differences, light sensitivity, noise levels, etc?
3. Is there a difference between shooting 6K cropped on the VV vs 6K cropped on the S35?
4. I understand the VV sensor is larger and has better light sensitivity. I have not however, seen any comparisons on this online whatsoever. So how different they are is a mystery. Does the difference in light sensitivity or noise levels vary much between the VV and S35 cameras?
5. If I did get the Raptor-VV and need a new lens, what would be best? Stick with EF and keep ND functionality with the KipperTie or move to RF? Is there such a thing as an RF to RF mount that adds ND functionality?
6. I see RED has an RF to PL Mount with electronic NDs. Is there an RF to EF mount with electronic NDs? Is one coming? Seems like it would be a hot item.
7. Would ideally like an anamorphic lens that covers the whole sensor and delivers a 2.4:1 aspect ratio. For that it seems a 1.3x anamorphic lens would be best, allowing me to use most of the sensor without throwing away too much of the image. Are there any good budget 1.3x anamorphic lenses? I cant really find any. Viltrox makes one but its huge and pricey.
WHAT IM THINKING CURRENTLY:
At this point, Im thinking that the Raptor-VV would probably be the better option? Although I dont have any glass to shoot 8K, I am perfectly fine shooting 6K anamorphic (on the Super35 Laowa Nanomorphs) for now, and just getting a spherical FF lens for 8K green screen work when I need it. It seems like the Raptor-VV would then allow me the most options for anamorphic at 6K and below whereas the S35 camera does not (since it only supports anamorphic at 8K). I guess Im just not sure what the trad-offs will be in filming at 6K cropped. I dont usually like filming cropped bc artifacts and noise usually show up more. If I bought the S35 camera, I’d almost dread being locked into shooting the docudrama at 8K in order to shoot anamorphic (and it would be a bear to edit in post) but it would use the whole sensor. What do you guys think?
