So i am about to edit a music video I shot on the RED. i am using my friends laptop with the newest version of final cut. I shot 4K, what steps do i take in for down converting to edit, then to color correction, then back to high res? i have red cine, red alert, and red rushes. thanks so much.

You probably should have thought more about this before you shot it on a Red...

there are plenty of posts bout this very same thing...do a search

i agree. im starting to grasp what i need to do though. i am going to edit with the medium quality proxy files, once that is done, what application should i send my project to for color correction? what is the easiest? and i dont have color. from whatever program i color correct, is it a crazy long process to upres?

thanks

Zach, it's very unlikely that you need to upres anything! You shot at 4K, the highest possible delivery mechanism for a music video is 1920:1080, and VERY FEW music videos worldwide would be delivered or watched in High Def I think.

Assuming you need only a 1920:1080 master, as long as your sequence in Final Cut is set up correctly (right size, right frame rate, etc.) I can imagine you could, if you want, do all the work on the timeline (including colour correction with Final Cut's 3 way colour corrector.)

hmmm, interesting. i really just want the highest quality end product. thanks for the input, its much appreciated.

Zach,

Simplest way to approach this for you would be to:

1.) Cut with proxies in FCP.
2.) Export XML from FCP.
3.) Import XML in ClipFinder.
4.) Use REDAlert for One light pass.
5.) Conform and Output delivery resolution files from ClipFinder.
6.) Do final CC in Color and output desired file using Compressor.

This is what I am hoping to do on my forthcoming production. If anyone believes this needs correction. I would love to be corrected.

Cheers all.

Then get access to a Mac Pro with the full FCS suite installed, including colour.
