  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

NEED ADVICE ON NEW MAC PRO PURCHASE

Thanks for schooling me Tom. I will manage the lacie with the SSD upgrade for now.But the Studio XL 64TB have just gone to the top of my list. How did the Lacie perform... were they reliable?

I tried the Promise drives but they didn't maintain speeds as consistently and wouldn't offer larger capacity storage.

I've only tried the Lacie drives with standard HDD's not with SSD. I'd imagine the performance is great but they don't have high enough capacity for long form projects.

I just bought a refurbished 8 core/32gb/d700/1TB boot drive Mac Pro trash can and it is working beautifully on native dragon footage. I highly recommend buying refurbished from apple to save yourself some money.

Also Lacie claim that with the addition of the Lacie d2 SSD upgrade I can reach speeds of 1150mbs on my existing drives... ever heard of this solution?

Friends don't let friends buy LaCie. Stick to the Promise Pegasus2 or the Areca Thunderbolt 2 RAIDs. They're fast and easy to manage.

The 6-core system will handle alright, much better than the 5K retina iMac. It will get you half-resolution playback of 6K RC-X. You may get an occasional hiccup and 64GB RAM would be ideal here if you can make it happen. Depending on prices in your market, you may do best to buy with the lowest amount of RAM and then upgrade on your own for a bit of savings. Don't plan on adding to the RAM that comes in the system, you will be replacing under most situations as there are only 4 slots and most configurations need all slots to be filed with matched modules.

For real editing, best to plan for working in 1/8th or 1/16th, but that will depend on your editing workflow and complexity of what you are doing.

Lacie 9000472 D2 Thunderbolt 2 6000 GB External

Download the Black Magi Disk Speed Test app and check the drive speeds.

I can get close to 700MB Read on a Thunderbolt 1 using the Sonnet Tempo Pro Dual SSD PCI Card in a Sonnet Echo Express Enclosure.

Off the charts when you use the local Flash drive off the new Mac Pro.

I wish I had DRAGON footies to test this for you.

Friends don't let friends buy LaCie...

Jeff that made my day ;)

I hope your at NAB this year.

Its safe to say that most of us here owe you a drink/shot heck even dinner ;)

Im the one for dinner :)

Have loads of people here had bad experience with Lacie? I've got a couple of dual Thunderbolt RAIDs that have been rock solid for over 3 years now - will be backing them up more often if so!

Also - has there been many other people who own the G Studio XL Raids? Ours are great, but we have an occasional issue with one where it runs at a higher temperature than another in the same conditions (runs ok, just temperature of internal drives is higher).

Does the Areca go up and above 40TB in size?
