Need help in deciding on primes or zoom anamorphic lenses with EF mount. Anyone here has any recommendations? or cautionary tales?
Any input is greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Jacob

Why EF vs PL? Most are PL mount generally..

Yea, I'd highly recommend PL mount for anamorphic. If you go the anamorphic adapter route, on all adapters (at least that I'm aware of), you'll have to worry about dual focusing, meaning adjust focus on the actual lens as well as the adapter, which can be a pita. It's easier to use true anamorphics with the mount they originated in, as opposed to retrofitting them.

there are no anamorphic lenses that will go on EF mount, only a taking lens with an adapter.
you really cant put any PL prime lens on an EF mount either, only zooms. the back element is too close to the film plane.

Since scarlet can easily run PL why not anamorphic PL? Even if your on a budget I'd look at the cheap anamorphic glass about to be released...it's probably more realistic or lomos for low budget choice. Square fronts are relatively cheap lomo wise...

If you really wanted EF for some reason, you could get a projector lens (eg a Kowa 16H) and then either a Rectilux or Rangefinder variable diopter, allowing you to pull focus on the diopter, keeping everything else set at infinity. It's a cumbersome setup though, and if you mount the anamorphic to the taking lens by screwing into the front thread, have to constantly realign the anamorphic glass to be the right way up whenever you change taking lens

Thanks for all the replies. The reason I want EF is because I already have several CP.2 EF mount lenses (I'm coming from Blackmagic EF mount). I'm also trying to stay away from adapters. So I guess I'm going to get a PL Ti mount for my Scarlet W.

Thanks again.

Anamorphic glass costs a lot besides for lomos, what set do you have in mind?

SLR Magic releasing inexpensive 3 lens set soon in M4/3, E and PL mounts, not Cooke's, but smaller in size and definitely lighter in price :)
Andrew said PL 2x set is coming soon
i love my kowa adapters, i shoot f1.2 with them, but simplicity of the one lens setup is very appealing;
actually for the price they look very good

Hey Josh,

Do you know if the Kowa 16H and a 50mm taking lens would cover the 5K Dragon sensor?

Thanks,
Thai

Brian, actually I'm not sure which one I want to go with. Once I get my Scarlet and PL mount, I plan on renting different ones and use each for different projects. I mainly shoot commercials for my own company's products. Maybe I'll start with 25 or 35mm, and go from there. As far as price, maybe around 7-8K per lens.

Cheaper range tends to be lomo square or round fronts. Cooke has a nice2x zoom about to come out. It's 70k but nice range to it. Kowas are at FJS right now for 65k. I been eyeing anamorphic stuff for years. Those cheap sets might be worth looking into too, the ones just coming to market

To me the hassle of anamorphics isnt worth it till they are 2x. Also I hate wierd focus issues on the non-pl lenses (i hate having dual focus controls). If your getting the scarlet-w, PL all the way. I also have cp2 and bought both the ef and PL adapters for them (easy and fast to change the mount once you get the process down).

That's too much of a hassle. I'd rather get a PL mount.

Paramon, those look interesting. I'd like to do more research and view more footage.

I also have other EF lenses, such as the 24mm TS E II, MP-E 65mm. So initially I thought that keeping everything in EF would make my kit lighter. But now I see that I have to have 2 mounts, PL and EF. I'm fine with that.

Yea, I try to stay away from doing that.

Hey Thai,

I'd be pretty confident that it would, but haven't been able to properly test it yet. I'm waiting for an anamorphic clamp to arrive, allowing me to attach the 16H to my Nikkor AI lenses. But handholding the Kowa in front of my 55mm 1.2, seemed to cover 6K comfortably (my 50mm was getting serviced). When I've got the clamp I can have a look for you

:) not my footage, i just posted a link ,
i am not too crazy about 1.33x, but for sure will try 2x as soon as avail,
i kinda got used to that dual focus nonsense :)

Thanks, Josh! That would be great.
I have seen folks using this combo on a GH4 with great results. But I wasn't sure if it would work on Red sensor in 5K or even 6K without vignetting.
Btw, with SLR Range Finder you eliminate the issue with dual focus. Seems to work quite well.

Best,
Thai
