I'm trying to put the MX on the end of a long crane and keep the Red 7" LCD near the operating base of the crane. Is it possible to find a 15- or 20-foot Red LCD monitor cable anywhere? I have the 10-foot cable already from Red, but it's not long enough.

I doubt that this is possible, but I do have a 6-foot Red LCD cable as well... is it possible to find a coupler to join the 10-ft and 6-ft cables?

Also, are these same cables used for DSMC monitors?

Well, I'd like to use the Red monitor with histogram and all that.

I suppose I could run it via HDMI to a 24-inch Dell at 1080p? Is the signal coming off HDMI 1080p? I've never tried it. We will be outsdoors at a remote location, but it is car accessible. Might be kinda cool for the whole team to see the feed.

Tom,

There was a guy on Reduser offering custom length cables (I think from Italy) a d he was running even longer lengths than 25 feet.

I use an HDMI cable to an HDMI ->DVI adapter, then into a Dell monitor. It gives you the full on-screen display you get with the RED LCD. Just beware that it's neither 720 nor 1080... it's some weird resolution with a different aspect ration due to the info display that a few of our Dell monitors support, while others refuse to display anything at all, so be sure to test it before you go into the field.

Try googling custom LEMO cables. I'm sure their are plenty of places that could make you one, but they might be kinda pricey.

I think i have one i just have to double check.
Do you still need it?
PM me
Best of luck
Luis

We have a 30-foot HDMI cable we use for all of our monitoring through a Samsung 720p TV and it works PERFECTLY. Especially on crane shots.

You can have the RGB Histogram and stop lights with a computer monitor, just set REDONE Monitor Menu, Preview to MENU[DVI] not 720p. Or flip back between the two.

I've found that the right 1440x900 19" computer monitor will display the full 720p signal from the R1 (all the info & meters just like the 5" & 7" Red's) and do it pretty sharply. Not all monitors will even display the RED signal however. I had to take my camera to a Tiger Direct / CompUSA store where they let me set it up and try a bunch of monitors until I found one that worked -- which took about 7. About $150-200.00 so a lot less than a long cable and a much bigger picture.

Yes, you can use the 22 to 27" 1080p / 1920x1080 monitors and -- if they work -- they will display everything but they also uprez the image and it usually looks a pretty soft.

So I use the 19" -- cheap and looks pretty good.

Steve, can you recommend an exact model? I take it you are running the HDMI straight from the camera to an HDMI port on the monitor? Or converting to DVI? Does it matter which HDMI cable I use? Sounds like it took you a while and some effort to figure this out.

They change these things so fast that I really think the best thing is to go to the store like I did and test until you find one that makes you happy. I got lucky the first time I bought one that worked but when it died and I bought a new one and took it home - it did not work with the RED. That is when I took the camera to the store. They were great and let me try 5 or 6 until we found one that I was happy with. I really like the 19" ones 'cause they are so cheap and a nice size/weight to deal with on set / location.

Most of the cheap monitors are only DVI - not HDMI - so I have both HDMI-DVI adapters and also a couple of HDMI to DVI cables. Be sure buy a cable that is long enough as I have had problems with connecting 2 cables with those cheap connectors. The 25 and 30 ft cables seem to be the best price point. The 50ft can get a little expensive.
