Hi guy's,

A few months ago I saw something about ND filters putted directly on top of the lens instead of using a matte box.
But I didn't have time to dig in to that... Can anyone tell me how this system is called?

I would love to use ND filters in the future but without using a matte box!!

Thx in advance...

Cheers, Kevin

Just screw ins - with step up or step down rings usually to 77mm thread. I have a full set of Tiffen Indie Por IRND's. They've performed well.

Kevin, the suggestion Liam has is the one option if your lens has threads. I also wonder if your lens does not have threads, I have a prototype sitting on the shelf for a filter holder for 80mm front lenses, that way they are independently rotatable. not sure if that's what you mean?

Hi Jason,

It was a system (like a matte box, but almost the same size as a ND filter) that you could attach on every lens available.
You just need it to fix it on the front of your lens in 2-3sec and you were good to go.
But I can't find it anywhere.

Cheers, Kevin

What I "Made" was I bought a Schneider or Cokin slide in filter holder. They accept the 4"x4" filters, but the ones they accept are thinner than the thicker 4"x5.65" used in matte boxes.

So I bought some sheet styrene, traced the shape of the little retainer/frames on the side and made shims to allowed it to accept thicker NDs...

You then buy the adapter rings that fit your various lenses.

I am away from home, so can take some pics later if interested.

This is the one I used and modified... Note the retainers are held on by small knurled nuts.... From pictures, looks like there might be a different version that is more molded or does not have th screws that allow easy addition of spacers/shims.

Formatt ahve this sort of thing too. Very useful for Grads on DSLR's. The mounting ring screws on the the lens front thread. Filter slot in the carrier that mounts on the adaptor ring. theres clamp on adaptors too for 80mm etc.

The filters are usually CR39 material which is the same optical material that is sandwitched between the glass filters used in Th.e cinematography style filters. Its opticaly fine but it does catch the dust and does scratch more easily.

Hi Scott,

I saw a system like that (http://www.leefilters.com), but that you could use on all lenses. Not only canon, nikon lenses but also Arri lenses and stuff.

But I'm getting closer to what I want ;)
