Native R3D in AVID

Just saw this myself! This is GREAT news! Finally!

These are also some great features Avid has incorporated and its partly because all of us told them what we wanted!

Edit QuickTime Formats Natively
Get native access to all popular QuickTime formats, with full access to clip metadata. Thanks to AMA, you can natively access and edit any movie that can be played in Apple’s QuickTime Player (including Apple ProRes and .mov files captured by Canon 5D and 7D cameras) right in Media Composer — no transcoding, rewrapping, or logging and transferring required.

Drag and Drop Video and Audio to Edit
Get comfortable — with Media Composer 5, you can truly edit the way you like. In addition to the standard way of editing, you can also now directly manipulate elements in the timeline to edit video and audio. Drag and drop clips anywhere you want on the timeline to rearrange sequences. And grab a clip’s in or out point and drag to trim a scene, dialog, or music.

Mark missed one other piece of Avid news. Avid bought Euphonix.

I am curious to see what kind of performance you can get in MC using R3d's directly. Obviously hardware dependent, but since Avid is cross platform, there are a lot of choices.

Tweeted earlier today. Follow me on Twitter Mike.

Call me a luddite, but I don't do Twitter. Nothing personal, but I just think it's a narcissistic waste of time. I know most people here disagree with that, and I have no problem with you or anyone else using it, but personally, I see it as a fad that I wish would go away already.

Having said that, I'll check your Twitter feed out. :anti-old:

I dunno, if you had a twitter you'd have alot of people following you :)

(twitter is pretty dorky narcissism though, and not unlike reduser or cml)

Sorry, but "you're a luddite" :-) Couldn't resist. @gnattress

You know, being a Luddite actually has some advantages. For instance, I'm not expected to constantly be available via text messages, so I don't have to pay attention to my iPhone while I'm driving. This in turn minimizes any distractions, since I'm never distracted by the radio, iPod interface, nav system, or economy indicator on the dashboard (that's right, I drive a hybrid Honda Insight - I may be a luddite, but I really like getting 42+ MPG..). Also, I don't have to deal with Twitter or Facebook, I'm not expected to have an iPad within 2 hours of its release, and Windows7 wasn't my idea, and didn't have to be. On the other hand, I still get to use my iPhone for email, I can still make Skype video calls - for free - from India to a friend in southeast Kansas (worked perfectly, 30fps video, no noticeable latency, 45 minutes on line - amazing), and I can still show up at Red events and have intelligent conversations with people like Mark, Graeme, Deanan, Jarred, Jim, and others who haven't officially joined the Luddite movement. Yet.

Hmmm. I've thought about it, but I like just having my blog, in part because I can post when I have something to say, and I have enough room to actually say it. It doesn't make it any less narcissistic (or dorky, for that matter), but it does give me a bit more control. And less expectations.

BTW, my blog is at http://mikemost.com, if anyone wants to read it.

So yeh, that native R3D support that's coming to Avid sounds dandy!

Edit: Speaking of which, is there an estimated release date for MC5 yet?

:-) Just ask people how long it took for me to get a cell-phone, but on the other hand I've been on email for 20 years now....

Lots of good stuff in v5 - overview here: http://www.avid.com/US/products/Media-Composer-Software/features

But that doesn't start to list the complete set of features or the depth and subtlety of those features. For R3D you will see support for latest color science, RDM color files, and we track all the parameters in the bin including ones farther tweaked upon import. So if you take your project somewhere else, pointing to the AMA linked R3D will remember those additional tweaks. Histogram can be have RGB channels solo'd, zoom in, and guides for SMPTE 16-235, etc. Support for Rocket Card is on system and will kick in anytime a render/transcode is initiated and the debayer settings are set to full.

There are also nice AutoSync enhancements that allow you to, in one operation, decided to remove or select A tracks on source V tracks and select any one or span of files on the incoming BWF (select mix track only for example), etc.

Lots of stuff... RED related and not - a little something for everyone.

All these features set and ready to work with the Interplay crowd?

@Michael - What an awesome upgrade. I'm seriously excited about this! Couple questions: will the R3D source files have to be in the dedicated MediaComposer folder Structure for proper import or will you be able to have your R3D's in any folder on any HDD? Same question goes for QuickTime?
Also, when can we upgrade/purchase the new version?
One more - when the documentation says you will be able to trim in and out points of clips on the timeline does that mean you don't have to be in trim mode to do so?
Thanks!

And most importantly, what is playback performance like using .R3Ds natively?

I think fuller details come out at 4PM west coast time on Sunday... so I will save ship date for that announcement, but being a public company and being tied to only being able to announce functionality available within the quarter... you do the math.

AMA allows your original source files to be in a volume/folder structure of your choice. For R3D, point to the top folder structure and it will index all sub folder contents. Same for QT. You also have the ability to drill down and link to a single file if desired.

Direct manipulation is just that - no need to be in trim mode. Amount of control you have is up to you. Enough said on that, you need to see it! Lots of good stuff there.

Performance is always based on lots of factors such as drives, etc. but you can expect with 64 bit OS, 2K playback (scaled to HD with aspect ratio control) in green/yellow mode as real time - need a bit more go to yellow/yellow. There is still optimization going on here, so don't let what you see at NAB be the final performance metric.
