  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Native 1080p 7"-8" field monitor?

Are there any true native 1080p field monitors out there between 7-8 inches? I looked everywhere and can't find one. I'm not even sure if it's possible to fit a 1080 image in such a small screen? If anyone could lead me to a link I would appreciate it. Thanks

Yes there are 7" 1080p Monitors out there. Had one on our camera today in prep. I'll write down the name tomorrow. It has nice controls too, adjustable focus assist, similar to REDs 1:1 focus assist but you can scale it. Powered by an AB battery on back.

I actually don't think there are native 1920x1080 7" panels commonly available.

There are 1280x800 panels in that size that are commonly available (or soon) like the SmallHD DP7 Pro though...

Thanks Dan.. Yea I wasnt too sure. I preordered the DP7 Pro but was hoping there was something out there with more resolution.

Check out Boland...I think these are native spec'd as you are looking for.

I don't have the spec off-hand, but we have a 7-ish that we use as a field monitor....It is a freakin' work horse...We use it in a variety of remote locations - Bahama's, Belize, DR, etc. We bought a hood for it for "high noon" sunlight when shooting exteriors. Works equally well in the studio - Red Epic Houston, etc.

We attach it to a tripod and tether it to the camera with about 10' of cord...

Knock on wood! we have had for over 7 years (the older model) -- the picture is awesome and it handles the heat pretty well. We find we have to significantly shade it when it gets over 105 degrees ambient temp in the tropics -- not much experience with it in cold wx.

If you end up liking it, shoot me a PM and I can send you a few bts field pix if I can find them...

I haven't, but I've been following their development of it, and I've owned DP1, DP1x and two DP6 monitors.... this DP7 is going to be bitchin. It'll beat the hell out of that TV-Logic for sure. I really believe in what the guys at SmallHD are doing. They definitely do stuff right.

Thank you Jack... Checked out there site. It looks like they have some solid monitors but it also looks like none of there monitors are native 1080p till you get to 12" and above.

Hey Trevor, I'm going to have to agree with you. I've been following the DP7 pro since it was announced and they really are doing some cool stuff with there monitors. Plus I love the fact that they can be upgraded through firmware.. Very big plus! I think they really out did themselves with the options for this monitor. If I'm not mistaken it looks like they might add on board recording, if they do it's gonna be hard to compete with small hd. I guess maybe I was being a little greedy wanting all that res in such a small monitor lol.. Trevor let me ask ur opinion since you have been following too... I preordered the DP7 Pro OLED since I'm not locked in to that model, if you had a choice would you get the oled model or the hi bright? What I'm really looking for is a monitor that's going to give me the closest image possible to what I'm recording in camera... Aside from that I want to be able to pull focus from it. Brightness is not my concern.. I don't mind using a hood. Thanks all for ur replies!
 
Not sure if 1080 is possible in 7"-8" monitors, but certainly too expensive to bring to market at this point. But the reason there isn't a big push for it I think is that its not necessary. It would be difficult to perceive the resolution difference from a small monitor at the distances we usually work from them. The smallest 1080 monitors I know of are the excellent 17" Sony OLEDs. (most 17" monitors have been 720 up till now). If its focus you're after, better to get a good focus/peaking feature, be it in camera or in the on-board. The new RED 9" touchscreen will be 720, but coupled with the excellent peaking feature in the Epic it will be incredibly easy to see focus. In fact, its pretty damn easy on the RED 5" and 7". I understand SmallHD has a decent built-in focus assist feature. I have a 5.6" TVLogic, and its focus assist feature is not very good.
 
John - the OLED sounds like the way to go for you. I'm soooo torn between the two right now, I'll eventually end up purchasing both versions I think. I'd like a daylight viewable monitor for steadicam work, but I haven't been doing much of that lately so will probably end up going OLED for my first one as well.

Haha ok good... glad ur torn too. I'll probably end up with the oled version..

AFAIK all OLED are daylight viewable. It's a different technology where you are viewing a digitally generated photograph so the brighter it gets- the better you see... The LCD technology is a backlit color filter so if the ambient light overpowers it you can't see. Anyway that's my understanding but we'll see I guess...

I agree the 9" is for a specific, more limited use - studio mode when the camera is built big. The SmallHDs are looking very interesting, especially being able to accept one kind of signal and output many. My main point was just that a small monitors' usefulness for focus (not judging lighting) is based more on good focus assist tools than on resolution. I wish we could send the focus assist (peaking) that is available in the Epic to 3rd party outboard monitors and get the best of both worlds. I've been told the Small HD has a decent internal focus assist function, but I've not tried it.
