Hello fellow cinematographers.

This thread is dedicated to 2600 people that recently got sucked from the Greek Government from the National Greek TV and radio stations , including camera operators, directors, documentarists, musicians, production workers, journalists , etc.

The Greek government decided to close down the ERT national TV station, pulling the plug and black out everything with out a warning, bringing back old memories of dictatorship, and methods and practices of the not very far past.

Those practices clearly show the methods used in new European plan about every single citizen at any EC, (and not only) countries around the world, and though you might think that this might be a one off individual practice of an individual government, think again. This might be closer to your doorstep than you think it is.

ERT TV is now broadcasting thru internet servers, from privet supporters fighting for free speech, that by the way are also blackmailed from the government that are illegal, and that they will be closed down because theY broadcast the NATIONAL TV program.

Now how serious can this be calling the UNTIL one week ago NATIONAL TV illegal, try to cover up the voice of greek national TV and Radio, so they can suck 2600 people
to please TROIKA request sucking more than 2000 jobs to be able to provide more loaning to feed the banking system with its endless hunger.

I thought I should bring this up since most of the ERT national TV workers are TV technicians, cinematographers , documentarists, just like many of you guys, and expose this as much as I can to help out this incredible action taken to a country that invented Democracy , yet to prove that there isn't that much left of this institution , not only in Greece but all around the world.

please support those people with any way you can.

Thank you in advance

Wow. Unbelievable.

What were the circumstances leading to this decision by the government (besides the obvious).

It would be great if you could provide us with more details.

I have a lot of information and videos , unfortunately all need translation.
In general, the Greek government is pushed to suck many thousands of people working in public services as they were a lot of corruption in the public services from past and present political favors. Favors made from past goverments INCLUDING THE PRESENT GOVERMENT ITSELF to be first in the line.

The thing is that now with the crisis and the huge loans that I personally think not even richer countries cannot pay back, now they are sucking thousands of people, with out even asking and taking this to the parliament using or re constructing laws for big emergencies, like war for example, to suck people with out having to explain, or even, CLOSE DOWN
a total PUBLIC service with out having to give explanations to any one .

ERT NATIONAL TV was decided to be cleaned from corruption by finding all the corrupted employes, that were place in the past in places with huge salaries, serving political favors. But instead of that, they now DECIDED since last week to CLOSE DOWN the broadcasting WHILE IT WAS ON THE AIR, stating that they will reopen a new National TV named under a different name, and employing 800 people to replace the 2600 sucked employes.

tHIS OFF COURCE ISNT A COINCIDENCE since they TROIKA is now in Athens ASKING for 2000 people to be sucked from the public services to serve the general plan.
So the government decided all of a sudden that they camn close down the TOTAL ERT NATIONAL TV and RADIO broadcasting so they can get the new loan from TROIKA,and black out everything in one night .

There are also other things involved like the new DIFGITAL PLATFORM DIGEA and the privet TV stations interests as they are even using illegal frequencies to broadcast their trash programs, using underpaid technicians, and refuse to pay for the change to digital platform using as an excuse the world crisis, as a common practice being used lately from privet companies to use it to avoid paying taxes or other services to the government. Its the corrupted system them selves, and the methods being used to serve big money makers while taking advantage of very cheap working hands sending their profits to exotic island banking systems, declaring losses and such.

I will try however to find posts and videos in English.

Last I will mention that EBU its self is supporting ERT national TV, and provided help thru platforms , internet, but they are also being cut down from the big interest and they have announced that they still support the ERT TV but they are now have also being cut from digital platforms to be able to provide the help, however they keep doing everything they can thru internet to broadcast the ERT program.

If this goes down , then the last barrier of civilization, in music, theater and cinema arts will be lost forever, nor to mention that freedom of speech will no longer exist as it will be fully controllable.

ERT TV was profitable and gave billions of euro to the TAX revenue , and its totally unacceptable to close down healthy profitable Public services specially when those services are representing freedom of speech and democracy.

Also ERT TV only means a small 4 euro / month fee to each civilian, and this is a very small price to pay for such a service, as you can discover what you are paying each to different countries for the same service so there is a free voice and not a controllable interest political party media services.

Many countries have already protested against the ERT NATIONAL TV closer and specially the dictator way that this has been done.

I will supply with links so you can follow it, and try and put my English better together to explain as this is not my native language.

Please take 5 minutes of your time, and write your opinion of what it would mean to you, a black out closer of your national TV and radio and how would that effect your civilization and culture as well as your democracy and freedom institution.

it would greatly help

Thanks for the interest and support in advance

Im suprised that EU doesn't take legal action against the Greekish government in this case. Its nice to see that atleast EBU stands together in this making their voices heard. Unfortunately there is very little coverage about this in the media. The only reason I can think of why they did this, is so that the Greek people have a harder time hearing the truth about what the government is doing. This is surely a BIG step away from democracy! There can simply not be any "savings" sacking all these people. The unemployement is already over 50%, so what should these 2600 people do now? I hope this situation will be solved soon, because its total bullshit!

And that's what happens, when governments and people live beyond their means. When they borrow and don't care how they're going to pay it back, something got to give. That's what happens, when governments abdicate their main responsibilities and give some faceless bureaucrats in Brussels the power over their citizens.
I'm returning from my vacation in Greece and never in my live have I seen such a rampant tax avoidance. No one accepts credit cards, no one wants to give receipts, no one wants any trace of financial transactions. And why would they want to pay such exorbitant tax rate? The tax rate is 70%! Greece is broken and EU is just kicking the can down the road, until they try to figure out how to kick Greece out of EU without Euro coming apart. Spain and Portugal are next...

Right now they have even opened a digital frequency of the called NEW national TV, with out even discussing it to see if its illegal or not, and quess who is the platform? DIGEA, which is the direct competitor of ERT NATIONAL TV in providing digital platform.
Now with out ERT there is no competitor or better suggestion.
Regards

My friend Jake. First of all corrupted systems and tax corruption is EVERYWHERE. That's nothing to do with selling all national services for nothing to Privet companies only to suck thousands of people and run away after the suck every last drop of blood of the company they took over. The same happens with the water companies. and so on. The point is that all around the world and not only Europe its the same story more or less. Its called Money. However I didn't want to talk politics here rather than let you all know that, the last barrier of democracy and civilization , is just about to shut down (its already shut down) even going against Constitution laws and the last years this is happening more and more.
Since now 2600 people relative in profession to us guys are loosing their jobs overnight with a dictatorship alike method and practice it would be good for all of you to know whats happening. And judge for your self.
thanks for your thoughts.

Very sad and a reflection of the current state of society.

Stay positive dear friend.
This OS has a short life span and things will get better.

"There will be no end to the troubles of states, or of humanity itself, till philosophers become kings in this world, or till those we now call kings and rulers really and truly become philosophers, and political power and philosophy thus come into the same hands."
Plato

Greece has an economy comparable to Colorado in the USA. Does Colorado have a TV station with 2600 employees ?

Constantine:
Minor Translation point: Use the word "sack" instead of "suck"

Les:
Better question to ask is "Are there more that 2600 people employed in the TV Broadcast Industry in Colorado?"

According to the US Census as of 2011: about 1433 people in broadcast TV, and other 1037 in Cable broadcast.

US Census NAICS 51520 for Colorado

Hello and thank you for the correction.

This is not just TV, this includes 3 TV stations, 3 radios, all music orchestras and musicians, as well as all historical cine and tv treasury , from the first film camera coverage and prints up to now.
so its not just what you think my friend. All greek recent history as it has been captured from inside the lens.

and BTW we are talking about NATIONAL TV not the average TV station, ERT is what BBC is for UK.

It includes more than you think.

thanks again

The point is not if ANY national TV can be operated with more or less stuff, neither if there is corruption at some employees. The point is that because the Government is corrupted them selves since its their and past governments corrupted favors which by the way can be counted in 2 digits, and because of other privet TV station wars, the Government shot down black with out even taking this to the parliament , like its dictatorship we have and not Democracy
then what will it follow? water national company? lets shot everything down. easy push a button.

Of course it would be easier to just sack the corrupted employees and even make a better plan. with out shoting down National TV black.

Another thing is this. ERT was always profitable. So what's the point in shutting down a profitable TV network? the reason is TROIKA asking for a quick 2000 people to be sacked from public services. So here we go , get rid of them with one go . so they can get more loaning to feed the banks.

I feel sorry for the Greeks and any country going through severe austerity measures. We used to live in communities now it seems we exist to serve economies. But Greece in not Las Vegas, what happens in Greece won't stay in Greece. The levels of debt around the world are not sustainable. I don't know how the USA is faring with its debt level and what effects it might be having on the community. I know Australia is only spared by selling dirty resources but almost everything else is in recession - and we're one of the lucky economies. China has alarming levels of debt with a third of companies borrowing money just to pay the interest - and they're the ones who make everything. Yes, I sympathise with Greeks and think it's time people start focusing on a healthy work/life balance. No doubt we'll all be earning less but on the bright side we might be living more (until we get evicted for being behind in the rent).

Council of state decided that ERT NATIONAL RADIO AND TV Cannot be closed down , and it will start broadcasting again as it was, until it gets replaced from a new national TV.
that is a first win over dictatorship decisions being made from the Greek government, and though they have managed to tune out all the broadcast points, so now the technicians need to tune again so they can bring everything to air.
the way is not easy as we still have a long way to win this case , but at least its first win.
Thank you all for the attention and thoughts.

I'm sorry to sound so callous, but unless i'm mistaken, the broadcasting channel in question is owned and paid by the Greek government. As a result, they are free to do as they pleased, including closing it down, firing every one and giving the airwaves to another entity. It's neither fair nor is it smart. This happens in places like Russia with frightening regularity and last time i checked, Russia wasn't quite a paragon of democracy they would like everyone to believe. And that is why i don't feel, that press should be subsidised by the government, which is the very entity, that press is entrusted to watch. If Greek people do not agree with the government's decision to close the channel down, they they should feel free to start and pay for their own, free from the government interference "people tv channel". Freedom of the press is not a luxury, that can be decided by some bureaucrats, but a nessesity. Giving up on the freedom of the press is not a luxury Greece nor, for hat matter, any other country in financial trouble can afford.

Iam sorry Jake but what you are stating is not as simple nor valid.
There are certain laws that don't allow the government to do so, unless its going thru the parliament and voted and decided to do so. There are many other matters that is very complex to explain in English and there are many doors open.
I suggest though to first read how this action was taken and decided, and then come back with some conclusions, because I think you got the idea that the parliament and the 3 party cooperation government(its 3 of them ) came and decided and voted that it has to close down and they did so. This is not what happened.
I will try and find some information to explain in better English the correct legal terms of this, but to start with you are not correct, this doesn't stand , there are many laws that don't let any government, at least in this country to act as a monarchy and make overnight dissections of closing down an entire public service, specially when this is a source of education, democracy, civilization, art and so on.
It is rather tricky what happens right now and I will try and keep this alive and more explainable.
Thanks for your thoughts

Kostas, as a fellow citizen of the EU I am really shocked to hear what's going on in Greece. Media in Austria are covering this topic in depth and it concerns a lot of people!
I feel very sad to see whats happening in the country which is the origin of democracy.
