Hey Guys!

I’m proud to announce that I recently completed my first National Geographic assignment, as a Director of Photography! I was asked to shoot a segment for their TV show “Dangerous Encounters”. I’m also very happy to announce that I recently wrapped principal photography on my first 4K feature film, and short film, using the new Red One digital cinema camera. Check out my on set production photos:

The Details:

The National Geographic shoot was really fun! We spent the day filming macro (super close up) shots of salamanders, newts, and toads. Some of the shots were controlled shots, while others were less controlled shots out in the woods in a creek. We used the Innovision HD Probe lens to do the majority to the work. The shows camera of choice is the Panasonic HDX900, so that’s what I ended up filming with. I have to say, the probe lens was amazing to work with. I highly recommend it if you want some truly hard to achieve shots.

My first 4K feature film, “Conversations” was a great success. This shoot was not the easiest to plan, as it involved shooting with 3 cameras simultaneously, covering the lower floor of an entire apartment, and shooting in real time! In order to pull this off in the smoothest way possible, I made extensive use of Frame Forge 3D, a pre-visualization program for filmmakers. In a nut shell, I made a trip out to the set and used a laser to measure out all of the sets dimensions and used that data to create an optically accurate model of the set. Inside this model I was able to move around the room with 3D cameras that mimicked exactly what the real cameras would see on set. This allowed me to figure out where cameras could be placed as well as where lighting could be rigged. At the end of the day, we had to rig a fairly large china ball cluster over set, complete with a skirt to help cut down on light spill. I was also able to hide a handful of other fixtures in the other rooms of the set. The main light, the china ball cluster, was rigged a day in advance, which proved wise given the small crew and cramped nature of the set once all of the cast and crew were inside it. Gotta love those DP instincts!

My first 4K short film was shot for C&I Studios, based out of Ft. Lauderdale, Florida. This was another multi camera shoot, which took place mostly out in the MD woods. It was a challenging shoot, as hurricane Gustav’s left over’s came ripping thru the area we were shooting in. Needless to say, that really screws up all of your plans! We just rolled with the punches, and ultimately got all of the shots we needed, thanks to some quick schedule juggling. Shew!

For those curious, both Red One shows rented their cameras from ZF Films (www.zf-films.com) here in the DC area, and our third camera for "Conversations" was a sub-rental from Crawford Multimedia (www.crawfordmultimedia.com), provided via John Vallon (www.jbvmedia.com). Thanks guys!

So far this summer has been very notable for me as a DP. Three TIME Magazine shoots, my first 4K feature and short films, and to cap it all off, my first National Geographic shoot, what a summer! My candid still photography is also being forwarded to National Geographic Magazine as well, so hopefully I’ll be sending out a Nuzzaco News report detailing an exotic photography adventure in some far off land.

As always, thanks for reading about my DP adventures!

Congratulations! Your work looks really good.

EDIT:

I just noticed that you have an andromedized DVX100. Do you have any footage from it that you could share?

I sure do:

As for my photography work, I REALLY gotta update my site. I also do NOT put the vast majority of my candids on my public site because I do not have releases for the subjects. I send out that link privately. In case your wondering, my cinematic style really does show in my candids.

These are the only candid shots I have on my public site.

I'm not sure this counts, because its a dog, but it was shot "spur of the moment".

Thank you so much. I have been looking for a good example of the Andromeda footage. You did a great job! ...But it makes me sad that they'll never develop Hydra... I can only imagine how that would have looked.

Chris,
My Nat Geo meeting went awsome. I have my 1st shoot with them early november(taking the RED underwater). Congrats my friend. We got a little to wrap out about. Call me.
