Hi guys

I want to purchase NAS system 4bay minimum and 8bay maximum. Which brand and unit that you recommend for having the best read in MB/sec ? My old NAS needs to retire, it is attach to the network switch and all computer can access to the storage, but it is only 1TB, time to upgrade ! Most review NAS that i read is meant for small and home user, while this is clearly not our aim.

Any recommendation please ?

I've had very good success with the NAS from Synology.

I did a little consulting for someone, looked into NAS storage for them. Single-person business, working with video (mostly After Effects projects). Gave them a comparison between a NAS from OWC, a Synology, and a Drobo. My recommendation was a Synology 8-bay NAS, with 2TB drives in each bay.

The only hiccup, and we found out the hard way, that Synology only works with the drives that are on it's Recommended Drive lists. Now, the list is fairly lengthy, and also not only relegated to the most expensive drives. But make sure to specifically look up by drive model number when you buy drives.

That being said, the client/friend of mine with the Synology NAS has had no problems since installation. It gives you a TON of different ways to configure, and a lot of control. Also not super hard to get up and running.

The Synology web based GUI is excellent and easy to use. The boxes are fast and easy to configure, but my favourite feature is that they're ever-so-easy to have run an automated backup. I have my boxes in pairs so that they can back each other up.

That's actually what I convinced my friend/client to do. They got two, and one automatically mirrors to the other every night. It took about as long to install and screw in 16 drives as it did to configure everything. Granted, it takes a deceptively long time to install 16 drives with 4 screws each . . .

Yeah, the screwing the drives in is the hardest part!

On a side note, I just did some research on drives for NAS, and was surprised to learn that there are huge differences in how drives are constructed, depending on their intended use.

Western Digital has a Red line of drives, made especially for smaller NAS systems, with a good balance between price and longevity. These drives have gotten very good reviews across the board - unless high throughput speed is the primary issue.
