  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

NAB13- Dragon Sensor Upgrade Program begins

Brent, I have to say Im a little concerned about the time limit specified in the email before you lose your upgrade and your camera is marked as executed.

Why on earth has that been added? We used to get a warning at least to say our cameras were due to be up in 10-15 days, but this is completely out of the blue.

Takes longer than 5 days to send payment from here anyway, even if I had it to hand.......

I would completely understand being put to the back of the queue if you dont make payment, but this seems very out of character.

For those that are curious- here is the email about Scarlet X >>> Epic X:

We are ready to proceed with processing your eligible SCARLET-X MYSTERIUM-X to EPIC-X MYSTERIUM-X trade-in order. The price of the SCARLET-X MYSTERIUM-X to EPIC-X MYSTERIUM-X trade-in is $9,500. Please contact your Bomb Squad representative to coordinate the payment with credit card or wire transfer.

Note: you have five (5) business days from the date this notice is sent to submit the payment in full. If payment is not received within five (5) business days, your order will be canceled and your serial number will remain executed.

PROGRAM OVERVIEW
  • Once payment in full has been received by RED and your order is invoiced, our RMA Support team will assign the RMA number and provide shipping instructions to send in your SCARLET-X for inbound QC functional evaluation
  • You will be responsible for shipping your SCARLET-X MYSTERIUM-X BRAIN only to RED for evaluation
  • The SCARLET-X inbound QC functional evaluation can be performed at either our RED Irvine, CA or RED Europe Ltd. locations
  • We anticipate about a 3-5 business day turnaround time from when we receive your SCARLET-X to complete the inbound QC functional evaluation and send you the results
  • We will send you a service quote if any repairs are needed to bring your SCARLET-X up to full functional specifications
  • Your Bomb Squad representative will then contact you with next steps on processing your new EPIC-X MYSTERIUM-X order

Thats really cool! I actually didn't sign up for that program, but am amped for all the soon to be even more overcranking Red owner ops!

Did anyone receive prior notice of this time restriction? Ive literally just paid out for gear, not thinking I would need all the cash this fast.

I mean, im happy to pay a deposit, or even go to the back of the queue and pay the amount in full down the road, but that's just too short a turnaround.

Andrew, that is why we took pre-orders starting at NAB - for people to get in line, start preparing their finances, and to be put on notice that when they were up in line, to be ready to act.

Why do we have timelines? Because we are trying to plan our internal resources accordingly for this program and other initiatives. We simply cannot have "open windows" for everything, sorry.

If you have special circumstances that prevent you from getting payment to us within 5 business days, contact your rep to work with you.

I have done, brent. Im still awaiting a response. Im aware that everyone needs rules, I just find the 5 day time limit very surprising.

Like I said, this isnt a case of if you don't pay within X days you go back to the start, its basically detracting value from your camera by voiding future upgrades.

When I signed up for the upgrade, I literally would have changed my mind completely and waited had this been made clear to me.

I have been a fiercely loyal customer and evangelist for your products for many years now and this came right out of left field for me.

I 100% completely understand you guys have a lot of things going on and you need to be able to devote time to important things like the upgrade procedures and so on. But I just do not understand why the first reaction is to completely void upgrade eligibility if for some reason someone cannot pay when their place in line happens to come up.

I may be completely out of line, but I don't see what (short of estimating purposes for manufacturing) could mean this situation necessitates upgrade voiding. Im not trying to cancel my order, only organise my ability to pay for it.

Andrew... I'm not sure of the upgrade procedure... but.. I was under the impression that this is a trade in program... I might be totally wrong... but.. if it's a trade in program, it's not hard to imagine why they'd want a short window... i'm not sure how many scarlet cameras are out there... but... i'm not sure RED wants a continual influx of Scarlet bodies...

like i said though.. i could be totally wrong.

Psssst! Andrew! There comes a time to just stop talking and follow instructions.

"If you have special circumstances that prevent you from getting payment to us within 5 business days, contact your rep to work with you."

I am talking to my rep Elsie, and as I said we will see what comes of this. I know I'm not the only person taken back by this, so I'm hoping for a resolution that isn't just an additional couple of days to process a wire transfer.

Even if those of us in this predicament paid 50% whilst sourcing the remainder I see no harm. (In theory of course)

Anyway lets see what the morning brings.

Peace

Andrew, I don't know what more to say other than your rep will work with you and accommodate you in regards to any special circumstances...within reason, of course.

Of course, I expect nothing more.

I've received a response so will see what happens from here.

I'm not trying to just complain for the sake of it, I was just a bit taken aback by the policy.

Cheers

Wow. Well I guess I'm happy I didn't stand in line yet as I didn't have the funds ready. I still want to upgrade to the Epic from Scarlet. I just hope that we have a longer window to finally make the order and stand in line in the future. Anything concrete on how long we will have to make that upgrade order? Would only like to do that when I am certain I can pay in full.

Let's move the discussion of "why do I only have 5 business days to pay for my upgrade/trade-in order?" to here so I am only posting in one thread.

I don't have an issue with the 5 days part but this should be optional.

Circumstances change and it sucks that you lose your option to upgrade if you don't make payment. Feels pushy and wrong and yes, out of character for RED.

I think you should be bumped to the back of the queue if you pass but that's it!!!

I'm, still looking to see some footage out of Dragon before I 100% commit to upgrading. RED cannot continue to expect customers to take huge leaps of faith. We did that in 2008 BUT times have moved on and competition in the 4K+ arena is fierce.

You don't lose your option to upgrade, Scott, you just go back to the end of the line. What you lose is the option to use that serial number to do a different upgrade. An example: if you had a Scarlet and put your serial number in line for the EPIC-X upgrade, when it comes your turn, if you can't pay, you go to the end of the line. But if you change your mind and want the Scarlet Dragon upgrade... well you should talk to your rep. That's what Brent has been saying.

Hope this helps!

The best thing that I did for my projects was to go from Scarlet -X to this outstanding EPIC-X camera! Slow motion and everything.. thanks RED for letting us upgrade without paying the full price for these cameras, GOD and you guys have made my dreams come true.

I think if the 5 day limit is to be in place then there at least has to be a timescale announced. I'm not saying this from a hobbyist viewpoint who doesn't have the money.

I have 2 x Meizler modules and a Red ray ordered IBC 2012 -- nothing

I have 6 Epics on Dragon + Rocket X and 4 x Proxy modules on order from NAB 2013 ---nothing

I saw Dragons being made at NAB - I took reasonable assumption that they would be in a relatively short timeframe of maybe weeks not months (I have 2 Epics in the first 50 I think).

Since NAB I have received a set of 10 x S4i lenses, a 28-340 Optimo and a set of TLS rehoused Cooke S2's (all 18months -2years waiting) and paid a huge yearly tax bill.

If you email me today for all that stuff I will not be able to pay it. A month from now it's no problem. That's business.

If I order on Amazon for something then yes I'd expect to pay it straight away. But at most we are waiting on stock, not product development and finishing.

If I'm expected to hold around $100,000 in cash on the off chance that you may email me this week / month / year when I have a lot of business considerations to take care of then I think that's unreasonable.

I'm saying that as an early adopter and big Red supporter who doesn't want to miss the next boat for purely fiscal reasons.

If you said "Shipping begins in XXXX and approximately XXXX will ship per XXXX. You have 5 days to complete the transaction" then I'm cool with that.

But at the moment you may email me today or in September with a 5 day heads up and that doesn't work for a lot of people, professional or otherwise.

It'd be great if the slack we supporters have given Red over the years when it comes to timescales and deadlines could be reciprocated.

Apple broke protocol due to the overwhelming pro communities outcry for an update on their progress for the mac pro...

But... it's basically done... waiting on chips from intel, from what i've read..... however... showing the computer before they can ship it is a gamble they had to take... otherwise we'd all be jumping ship... some still will... but... they've, for the most part, quelled the uproar...

now... speculation skyrockets on their next product(s)... 4k monitors? MacBook Pro's with 4k retina displays... with them showing their hand... the competition has a head start to try and race a competitive product to market by the 4th quarter....

Red obviously works differently than Apple does... Correct me if i'm wrong... but.. It seems that they blow everyone out of the water with a product announcement, then get capital investment from the customer base.... making us all "stockholders" of the company in a cool way...

I like it...... gives us something to look forward to...

but an honest estimate on when the cameras will start being upgraded/shipped would probably go a long way right now. I work at a non-profit cpu research facility... the multimedia budget is not high on the priority list.... We had a donor interested in purchasing a new dragon package... not an epic... but... since there is no timeframe, we probably won't be able to procure a dragon via donation. That's 50,000.00 gone because a shipping estimate hasn't been announced.
