  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

NAB13- Dragon Sensor Upgrade Program begins

Steve Duncan.. you are full of shit.

Go piss on someone else's tree.
well we wont be hearing from him anymore lol

OK.. HDRX stays. That was easy. Thanks guys... some good ideas here...
HDRX is very important tool for tracking footage for CG insertion to it. Very useful tool for adding any VFX to video feed. Because it have almost no blur so you can track it much easily. Thank you!

What's your workflow for this? You track the X track and then apply the track to the normal footage?

Brilliant idea for tracking. I gotta try that.
It would be awesome if we could figure out a way to have both of the tracks at the same exposure.
Just an idea.
- Do the exposures directly after each other.
- Use the new electronic nd filter to underexpose the longer exposure

That way we would have 2 identically exposed images but with different motion blur.
I do think we need better software to deal with these new tools in a better way. I love the idea of painting out certain details so that they are sharper while retaining the motion blur on some areas (as we can already do). But I'm sure there are ways to do this without hand maksking them.

HDRx is very exciting. One comment about timelapses that not so many know
- The Epic is the ONLY camera I know of that can generate time lapses for faster moving occurences in RAW.
A canon can only keep up with 0.5fps in a time lapse. This means that clouds for example will move 50x faster than they do in reality. I often find this to be too fast, you know that stressed feeling that most timelapses have.
With the epic you can do a RAW timelapse at 2 fps for example, this means that the clouds move about 12x faster which often will create a more pleasant look. And tada, you got it in pretty good HDRx. The Canons will do it in even better hdr since you can take 7 exposures or even more however you will wear out the shutter and get data that is much less fun to deal with. It's so funny I keep telling people around me that the Epic is so much easier to operate than a Canon camera. Better, more powerful and easier to use, that is the way to do it.
A limitation now since we only have 2 exposure steps is that we cannot do a good timelapse of a sunrise where it starts in darkness. Currently I actually stop the recording in the middle and adjust the exposure and start again. That will generate more post work and reduce quality but it still works.
A goal I have is to have several Epics that collects several timelapses of the sky and then you can puzzle them together so you get more panoramic ones.

I'm still thinking ... Scarlet-X to EPIC-X (and maybe a future upgrade to dragon) or Scarlet-X to Scarlet-D... this is my dilemma.
60fps @5K with better light performance or 5K with the "Old MX" sensor... with a 6k im-possible dream.

:-(

For those of you with Scarlets - the Epic upgrade is a sweet deal. Epic's wider field of view makes a huge difference, and at 5K the noise is so tiny it's almost invisible at 1080p.

If we might hesitate to upgrade, it's mainly because we are so happy with our Epic already. The Epic is truly what all us old-guard Red MX owners wanted and more.

BTW - I used to be Robert Ruffo (not new) and my account got accidentally deleted. I also co-owned Red 2888 with Van - been shooting since 2008 on Red - not sure if "Junior Member" is fair.

Epic-X Dragon will be $24,000.

There will not be a NAB film shot on DRAGON this year. We had to make new ASICS for the Dragon remember and those literally just came in, and we are finishing off the firmware now.

The Color Science and sensor calibration with a sensor with this much latitude is substantially more difficult to get perfect.. and we didn't have it complete in time to shoot something before the show.

Jarred/Jim,

Any idea when the Epic-X Red Dragon can be pre-ordered from Red.com?

On the other hand, when I want all those things you listed, I just turn on lookaround and plug in my hyperdeck and record Scarlet's full clean 5k 24fps sensor area to 1080p dnxhd/prores files

That's the $300 upgrade option :)

I would upgrade to Scarlet Dragon. 60fps @5K is sweet, with the new DR and iso.
I think anyway I will shoot 5K, on the Epic Dragon, most of the time.

Of course.

I love posts like this.

I often get the feeling that many of us are overwhelmed by the fairness surrounding the way you guys do things. We get ourselves worked up by whether or not everything is going to be cool, then you just totally reassure us that we are all on the same side.
