  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

NAB Photos

Thanks Cail!

I completely forgot that Blackmagic was planning to release Davinci for the masses.

I found a guy on DVXUser showing some pics of Ted with someone flying a "Scarlet" on a Steadicam. Not sure which model it was further than one of the interchangeable DSMC systems. It's not apparent from the photos if the prototype was working or not but it seems a bit silly to fly a non working prototype. He promises video soon so that should clear some things up.

He said the videos are encoding on Vimeo. Here's his Vimeo page where they might appear. Video number four is the one we're looking out for.

UPDATE: I asked the guy, who turns out to be Randall Rodriguez, if it was a working prototype and he confirmed that it was. It must be a 2/3" interchangeable or an EPIC.

Posted this in its own thread since it's quite noteworthy.

A couple of quick points.

While Red Rock is mostly DSLR, these days, the sonar measure looks very cool and if it works well, it will be a great addition to the Scarlet.

The Scarlet on a steadycam looks super compact and easy to fly. It may be a little odd to balance but people have figured it out with DSLRs so it will not be a problem.

The PS technik sr3 digital back went totally under the radar. There are a ton of sr2 and 3's out there so this was a good idea that unfortunately, is like 3 or 4 years too late. The Scarlet 2/3 interchangeable offer the same thing at 1/3 the cost.

Expect Storm from the Foundry to make waves. Not a lot of info but I am very optimistic.

Adobe CS5. I hope this new suite has Apple sweating profusely because if they do not counter soon, the will lose a lot of customers. Adobe has been improving their software in leaps and bounds and I expect CS5 to take a big piece of the Final Cut/ Media Composer pie.

DaVinci for a grand! Looks like Color is not alone in the budget grading world. I expect this to be huge if it works as anticipated. This is very very big news that came out of nowhere.

Expect companies like Cinevate, Redrock, Zacuto ect to flood the market with Scarlet accessories at NAB next year. This was the year of the DSLR but Scarlet will rule next year. I hope red is ready for the flood of customers that will be ditching the Canon's for Scarlet's.

It's an Epic. It's too big to be scarlet. Also the 2/3" sensor would make the RED 17-50 telephoto.

Thanks for sharing

I love that steampunk hack.

If Ted is reading this. Please bring at least a non-working touchable body to the Post-Pit tomorrow. I would love to hold one and get a feel for its size.

Cool stuff:
Cinevate mini sliding dolly.
Cineform DPX (Will eventually work transparently with any DPX compatible app and offer)
Nexto DI Video Storage Pro. Backup every card format known to man onto a 500 GB internal HDD and external USB or Firewire simultaneously. Plus preview footage on 2.5" screen.
Arri Alexa - Looks great, feeds look good only worry is that uncompressed recording options will break the ergonomics.
Aaton Penelope Delta - Film and 4k from the same camera. Now how about some frames to inspect?
Caldigit Supershare. 20gbs with a $300 PC card and a switch comparable in price to fiber channel? Yes please.
The enthusiastic handsfree Segway/Gyro leveled AR head steadicam guy.
DaVinci + GPU accelleration for $1k.
After Effects auto roto. We'll see how well it works in practice.
CS5's script to screen workflow. Of special note is its clever use of global time stamp in order to match onSet notes to clip's time stamp for matching your footage to your notes. CSV output will be amazing for shotgun integration.
The Foundry - Everything they're doing.
Prime Focus - Deadline never stops evolving. Now add Shotgun integration please.
Gearnex - It is what it is. Which is to say pretty cool for the price.
Redrock - DSLR stuff.
SmallHD.com - Very cool 5.6" 1280x800 monitor. Build quality seemed excellent. Plethora of features and connections. Viewing angle was seemingly unlimited.

---

Dishonorable mentions:
Zocatu. Build quality seemed cheap. Just because something is modular doesn't mean it can be made into something that's usable. Redrock seems to be offering better quality at 1/3 the price. And the redrock seems well thought out with easy switching between shoulder and tripod.

strange, i always saw Zacuto as super high quality, better than redrock but yes, for the price redrock gear is excellent. I am looking forward to their Scarlet products.

Thanks Gavin.

Hey Cail,

Can you check out LED lighting? Litepanels have a new light, but other companies may have something interesting too. Thanks....

We interviewed "LEDZ" earlier this afternoon, whom have somewhat of a relationship with RED.

Coming either tomorrow night or Wednesday Night, we will have that up on vimeo.com/supodcast...

Hey Cail,

Can you check out LED lighting? Litepanels have a new light, but other companies may have something interesting too. Thanks....

I might have time on Thursday, but there is about a third of the central hall devoted to lighting, and I'd say about 95% of the booths have LED lights, there's no way I could get through it all. Will have a gander for you Thursday though.
