  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

NAB 2014 - DRAGONcolor and REDgamma 4

Phil and I had opportunity to check over a camera build and RCX build - Dragoncolor and RG4 is every bit as significant for onset viewing. Requires little to no 'explanatory notes' for less tech savvy viewers. Put simply, it looks nice right away ;)
Low light is not especially impacted, however the revised gamma does prevent perhaps less-wise shooting decisions re: under exposure / noisefloor.

BURST MODE! Very Excited to see what this can do!!! Thank you RED for the hard work!

Sounds great, can't wait. :o) RC4, Burst mode, and so more to explore, thank you.

A very impressive new feature set ideed.

Really curious to understand why skin texture looks so much more real.

Great idea on having multiple calibrations - a step towards the need for calibration being the exception rather than the rule. :)

[Edit: I misunderstood what 'low compression Burst mode' was => Very excited to see how many seconds burst mode runs for - and if 'running out of RAM as a write buffer' is the point where burst mode switches off (ie if writing to media can happen in conjunction).]

Exposure assist - This sounds interesting. :)

Amazing work!

Phil, thanks for posting all this, but I would love to see RedlogFilm comparisons side by side (with same luma curve applied to both) , but with just the colorspace changing- the effect of a gamma pulled down lower in the shadows (as happens with RG4 vs RG4) is hard to pick out from the effect of simply/only better color (especially without knowing the images) as a lower toe end has the side-effect of increasing saturation in the blacks.

Wow. Burst mode could be à dream come true. Great to see the x and à track in there. I missed it several Times.
Cant wait to test it out!

Uh fuck! This is the most exciting news yet, my head is spinning from all of these posts!

Super Saturation - Shot 1

Early on we noticed that Dragon had access to a lot of color information. So much it was actually carrying over into highlights on tricky sources, like the orange sign in the background next to the man in frame. Graeme worked hard and the highlight chroma roll-off is much more wrangled under saturated sources. Huge accomplishment in reality.

Super Saturation - Shot 2

Another test of tricky color sources. Check out how the tail lights and the El Capitan sign in the upper left corner are now. This is good. Also the guitar neon sign in the background shows perhaps the biggest improvement.

Thanks for these, Phil.

I can clearly see the improvements in the skin tone images with DRAGONcolor/RG4 and I agree that the red response under RC3 could be a little over the top and needed a little reigning in.

However, I guess I mostly disagree with your assessment of the "improvements" in the super saturated reds on the two versions of these images.

Pinkish taillights (in the case of the Mercury on the far right in the first pic) are better than white with a colored halo, which happens on the cars at the left of the same image.

But, taillights and red traffic lights here in Michigan tend to be a very saturated red. Is the neon guitar really that pink? Even if it is, I'm pretty sure the red inside the traffic light hoods is pretty darn red in reality. I suppose they can always be punched up in grading as long as the color info is there.

The RC3 versions render more like Sony cameras do. They're not perfect but they convey saturation with acceptable colors (oranges and yellows) versus how the white/pink halo look does, in my opinion.

Perhaps in order for digital sensors to correctly render objects reflecting red and light sources emitting red, it's going to take brute force dynamic range improvements.

The simple solution (if, like me, you prefer the reds and oranges more lively) is probably to use some combo of exposure, grading and RC3.

Maybe once the new RCX is available, you could supply the R3Ds of these images so we could have a look see?

A lot of great news unfolding here!

Strange how my heart seem to be beating faster and faster with all these NAB2014 threads ;-)

A big personal thanks to Graeme for working so hard on this and doing all this mad scientist stuff while having just had a new baby....

Merci mon ami

Peter

This coupled with the new OLPF in the proper orientation is going to make a substantial difference in what already was an amazing camera. Just colored an upcoming Alicia Keys video that I wish I had this new color science video for... Not that it's lacking in any way, but I'd love to have seen the differences in a telecine bay.
