  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

[NAB 2014] Bee plasma light from Hive

Hive guy in video said standard 11" speed rings.

Ive worked extensively with both remote phosphor and hive lights, and I would strongly suggest taking a look at the ergonomics of the light, weight of the light and quality of the light before you buy. The hive quality is similar to hmi, perhaps a little more harsh, and you get more punch and directionality than most traditional LEDs. The hives are very heavy for what they are, and the accessories for their killer pars quickly become a hassle. Their spread is not as wide as a standard hmi par, as the reflector around the plasma does not fill up the entire par lens.

Personally I would go w the Cineo for output and quality vs power draw. I find that it is much much more pleasing in terms of light quality and falloff. If you need the punch, and just the punch, then hives could be a better option. But if you're going to spend that type of cash, might as well just get some jokers or an M18.

Well I think that's rather where the 'Bee' factors in for Hive. Their regular units have to be compared to HMIs on a price/output equation. But this one is $2k with a 100 degree beam spread - that puts it in a whole other category for price/output.

Exactly. Much more affordable than a Joker.

What's the light output equivalent to, in HMI terms? Anyone know?

I own the range of Joker HMI's . . . not the most thought out product. Looks to be some off the shelf Italian fixtures refitted with different guts. The Hive looks to be an odd ergo piece of gear. Square lights somehow just don't seem to work as well. Cool concept but would have to test the light quality to see if this has a place beyond ENG
