  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

NAB '11 "Surprise" Guessing Game

Martin Weiss I love your idea. This would also allow for single camera 3D acquisition (assuming the angle didn't restrict the virtual camera perspective). It would hit like a million birds with one stone. Awesome.

In '07 Peter Jackson shot 'Crossing the line', maybe this year they'll show a 3D 5k movie shot by another famous director.

Scarlet now has a bigger sensor but still the 3k resolution.
maybe aps-c format ?

3D Footage from tentpole Red One / Epic shoots (Pirates, Hobbit, Spider-Man). Almost a given.

Announcements / endorsements from more A-List Directors (Scott, Aronofsky, Cameron). The dominoes keep falling. Epic is the future of big studio cinema.

RedRay 4K/3D to cinemas from major studios / distributors. No one else can provide RedCode's quality at anywhere near these bitrates.

Maybe even RedCode distro to homes via 'net (Netflix or YouTube 1080p+ RedCode, anyone?). Perhaps this needs to wait until PC's get faster, or Red Rocket-type decoder hardware gets embedded into other devices, but again - high quality at low bitrates win the day.

No cheapo cameras, monitors, lighting or projectors, because Red is now a professional-only company (no soccer moms), and there are already established pro players in all those markets with razor thin margins.

In my opinion, the FF35 Epic will become the main IMAX digital camera once it hits the streets. 4K RGB 3:2 finish for IMAX.

Can you imagine if the RP Anamorphics covered Monstro....?
Of course they'd weight 5 lbs each...oh wait...

I'd shit-a-brick. Talk about Epic. Focus pullers beware.
At least Monstro will be sensitive enough to shoot most narrative at 5.6.

I'll add one more.
Pipe dream...
Red ones turned in for stage 3 get receive new boards... and become RED 2's for BT resale.
Boards include Epic light Brain boards and built in Pro I/O module boards.
Save the planet and recycle. Go green or go RED; your choice!

I'm more inclined to think the opposite of Sanjin's idea.

Instead of having an even cheaper camera with lower resolution, which in my opinion flies in the face of everything I know about Jim, I think he might just change Scarlet Fixed 3K to Scarlet Fixed 4K thanks to the last minute development of a denser, improved sensor.

Why? Because I believe Jim has based his entire venture in believing in 4K. I think it almost hurts him to accept the compromises inherent in selling a 3K camera. If there is a way to get Scarlet Fixed's resolution up, I think Jim will really, really want to do it.

Naysayers might note that prototypes of Scarlet Fixed are already floating around, but nobody has had an opportunity to personally use one and drag footage from it. True, we have Felix to thank for some 3K footage, but as Ted said, final specifications are still being worked on.

I would expect another price increase, and that this might not sit that well with the marginal customers (like me) who would be impacted by it. That being said, in the nicest possible way, Jim produces the cameras Jim wants. Does Jim really want a 3K camera?

What I think RED really needs is a $1,000-1,500 4K LCD panel. I was just looking for a new external monitor for my system, and noticed that Samsung has some really nice 22" HDTV displays for about $200. Put four of those panels together, add some electronics and we could be on the way to delivering a genuine, cost-effective 4K monitor. Combine that with RED Ray and we have something to really look forward to.

One neat thing about a 4K video monitor is that it would be very useful as a computer monitor. A 46" 1080P TV makes a horrible monitor because the pixels are too big. A 44" monitor made of four 22" HDTVs would be a wonderful, super-high resolution screen that I think a lot of hard-core computer users would love to own.

I think Peter Jackson would love to come, but I wouldn't be surprised if his schedule doesn't permit it this time, thanks to his recent sickness. So don't be too disappointed if we don't see The Hobbit this time around.

didn't RED announce a few years back that they were developing a 4k Projector?

I quized TED on that 2 years ago at the Edinburgh Film Festival during his trip and he said that nothing really had progressed on that front because they where trying to get the cameras built.

That said, I am with some of you where by I'd love some sort of RED 4K projector or monitor to show the footage from EPIC - I think that will really sell it to those other than A list directors and DPs of the benefits of shooting RED.

Red Pro Prime 14mm, 65mm or 135mm. It's been a while since they've updated that product line, which it appears has been quite lucrative for Red. Lots of sets of these lenses out there. Just my two cents.

I'd be delighted if the surprise was that us 'normal' folk can put deposits down on Scarlet.

I'm going for Monstro developments... certainly working FF35 prototype, maybe even the 645. Jim mentioned somewhere about seeing awesome results from that program; to me that's Chekhov's gun. At NAB he's going to use it.
