We got our new Mysterium-X sensor last week and wanted to give it a bit of a torture test. So on Friday night myself, Ivan Kovac, James Okubo and a model, Valeria, headed down to Yoyogi Park at nighttime to make a little commercial for our new sensor to show just how good it was.

Needless to say, I was utterly blown away! What you are about to see was shot at ISO3200 at T1.9, 1/50th shutter 23.976fps. It was lit by a solitary candle and one of the park's path lights about twenty meters away (just to give the trees a bit of depth).

The latitude and dynamic range of Mysterium-X is, quite frankly, astonishing! And what tiny amount of noise there is at ISO3200 is random and visually pleasing, like film grain. Not to mention the colour and highlight reproduction! This small demonstration has both the darkest blacks and brightest highlights (from the candle) and it handles both ends with amazing finesse!

There is no colour correction done to this clip at all, in order to show you what the footage looks like directly off the sensor.

It was edited entirely in Adobe Premiere Pro CS5 (including the audio mixing) using the new Red3 Importer plugin, online using the 4.5K R3Ds.

Please feel free to mirror this file on your own server to help take the load of mine! It's 405MB in size and is a 1920x816 MP4 file which should play back on both PCs and Macs. Make sure you play this back on a calibrated monitor and on a high fidelity audio system as there's some wicked bass in the mix ;)

Feedback is most welcome.

Addendum: It's a scary clip so maybe don't watch with small children!

Enjoy! (because shooting charts is boring!)

That clip was quiet dark man... Shot clean and I didn't notice any noise, MX Sensor is definitely a step up.

Oh my, that was lovely. Thank you for sharing, Paul.

Thanks for all the feedback so far! I can't stop watching this myself!! :D The noise floor and character is simply incredible....

Cheers,

Paul

Amazing footage but she scared my boy!
Sorry Paolo! I've put a little note in the original post to note that it's not really suitable for small children (or easily frightened adults?!).

Cheers!

amazing Paul, too much light for me ;-)
Congrats... still waiting for my batch.

So the upgrade is definitely worth it huh?
I think anyone who looks at these sorts of tests and doesn't upgrade is crazy (providing they have the funds to do so of course!). It's a no-brainer IMHO.

Cheers,

Paul
