  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Um, my wife will kill me, but probably just xmas and boxing day for me. I'll still probably do some coding as you can't keep me away from this stuff.

Dear Mr. Nattress,

Since the cameras are going to have what amounts to an image processing specialized processor on them, is there any way you could allow us to tell the camera to "Process CF Card with Median Filter to 1080p". Such processing takes over night for a 10 minute of video on my PC, and might be only a few minutes on your ASIC.

Thanks,
Tom Schaefer

Camera architecture is not suitable for re-processing data like that.

How come there is such a difference in noise between the 500 clean and the 1000 fairly noisy stills? Seems like a big jump for a one stop increase.

I'm also guessing that there will be a difference in noise between the upgraded M-X reds and the Epic/Scarlets.

Why do I have a feeling that Jim just posted a photo of the Christmas bonus that his Red team is getting this year. Either that or it's a photo of lunch. :-)

In all seriousness...those are some good looking images. I look forward to becoming a Red customer as soon as I can.

I'm about to debut Obscure Knowledge Test Lab. Now before anyone gets too excited, let me say it's going to start off slow, but basically I will provide some R3D test files for people to take a look at under different conditions. I've got a test subject who is very cooperative and I just upgraded my web site hosting account to unlimited bandwith so people can download the R3Ds. With each R3D will be information about lens used, camera settings, F-stop info, filters, type of light, etc. People can then play around with the files, get hands on with the processing. Hopefully this will continue once Epic and Scarlet comes along. The place to find these files and info will be here.

Look for a test file to appear soon and an official announcement of the site.

The real question is "why did I post those before Graeme and team were done...?"

If from ISO 500 to ISO 1000 on those subjects the noise floor jumped considerably...

The 'Snappy' that Jarred posted at ISO 800 probably was shot with an upgraded code, because it's clean as hell.

Jim, you could just delete this thread and post a new one with a new test. We'll of course get excited all over again.

:biggrin5:

We're refining the sensor output continuously so every day the image gets better and better.

I think the 1000iso is a tad overexposed or lifted in conversion. The blacks should be lower/ darker, they would appear cleaner. I say this because the 4000iso the blacks are deeper! I am specifically looking at the black border in the chart by the #1. (top left)

Jim didn't even have an OLPF filter in his camera, so what does that tell you about the stage of development? Just look at what properly de-noised ISO1600 Red footage can look like, and consider that that is based on an ISO320 "rated" sensor. Or think that this new sensor has 1.5 (to 2?!?!) stops lower noise.

My guess is that we'll get perfectly usable ISO2000 for 2k projection. Some of us might see some noise in parts of the image if not perfectly handled, but only cause we'd be looking for it. I think finished ISO2000 noise levels won't matter at all because the same image will be deemed a "perfect image" by audiences, as in zero complaints when you ask a bunch of them to take a close look and tell you if it looks right.

This is impressive, but such revolutionary sensitivity will force us to use (strong) NDs almost all the time - not good for hand held, light weight work - if we want to benefit the high dynamic range, right?
Is the dynamic range at ISO 320 the same as was in the normal mysterium?
While I think this power is great and nearly umbelievable, I don't know if I am going to have the sensor swapped. I'm not sure it would be necessarely an advantage, considering the dynamic range factor that I could possibly end up with, in average light situations.
mmm... I will wait for more information about all this.

M-X will give you a better image than M at ISO 320... as well as at higher ISOs. Less noise means you can protect the highlights better and find more info in the shadows at every ISO.

Well if you are using an optical viewfinder, you would be correct in terms of have a really dark image in bright conditions(sunny beach/snow).
When shooting film I allways end up at 3 or 6 effective ISO in those instances.
I use a lot of ND just to be able to open the lens to my often desired F2-2,8.
This viewing issue has disappeared with digital cinema and is one of the advantages.
This said, last time I checked, there was little difference between the weight of my ND0.3 and my hotmirror ND2.1;-)
In my opinion you should almost always have room for physical filtration i professional cinematography, be it documental, commercial or narrative.

In my test Canon 7D dslr was not more sensitive as a Mysterium @ ISO 1600.
The issue was only M noise but also 7D Dual DIGIC 4 Image Processors CMOS sensor was noisy.

That means M-X is going to be much better when deal with noise issue...and I'm happy because of that...

The Cohiba in the shot, is that what you're popping open when the Scarlet is ready for shipping? I'll be searching my stock for a nice one too when I place my order.

I'm embarrassed to have posted this thread. Graeme and Deanan magic have made these images completely obsolete. I should have waited... new ones coming. :-)
