This stuff is all over the place on these threads, so I'm gonna try and gather it all in one place by describing my workflow and see if it is the best way to go about it.

So, we shot our footage at 4k and did several scenes at 3k 48fps (which I later learned can't be cut in FCP).

I'm planning on editing the proxies, I believe the ones that end with _P, and then sending the timeline to color and re-attaching it to the .R3D file, and then exporting it out. (I have a color guy who will be handling it at this stage).

All I have to do is import the proxies, ending in _P, for every shot, edit it together, and then I'm able make that attach to the .R3D file when I send it to color, correct?

Now, one problem was that along with the 3k footage, on our last day the camera wasn't set up to generate proxies. I'm assuming I can generate my own using REDCINE, but I want to make sure that the footage will be linkable later on. Do I do that by just giving the new file the same as the .R3D file, but with a _P at the end?

Recommendations? This is my first time handling all of this on my own.

ok, yes you import the _p proxies into final cut, do your edit, and then send to color. Do your grade, send back to FCP, render, export, and you're done.

your two issue. 1: Clip folders that don't have proxies are not a big deal, open the .r3d in RED ALERT!, go file/make quicktime proxies, BAM! your good (NOTE: you can only use the release build REDALERT!, not the beta build which does not support proxies at the moment)

2: I know a lot of people love shooting 3K for slomo, but the problem is that Color resizes both 4K and 2K to a uniform 2K, but 3K to the very odd 1.5K. I don't know what people have done to address. I personally avoid shooting 3K. If you're going down to say SD, this isn't an issue since your oversampling either way, but if you want a 1080p or 2K master it's an issue.

How do I obtain the release build of RedAlert? Is that something that came with the camera?

Got it. Awesome. Now, since I'm editing with Proxies, what are the best Project settings to use? I've got my sequences settings to match the footage, but do I need to adjust the project settings?

set RT to Unlimited, and I think that's pretty much it :)

What should my project settings be? Or does it not matter. Getting lower quality playback, but when it's paused it looks HQ.

sounds like you need to need your playback settings to high or best in the RT drop menu
