Let me cut right to the chase and say that Dragon amazes me! It can be pushed to its extremes soooo nicely. Where as my MX simply falls apart. Man I LOVE the way highlights are blown out and dealt with as a whole. Soooo good.

As for shadows and noise... having a chance to FINALLY test this first hand with my new Dragon I see what people are talking about. BUT let me say this. Dragon noise is sooooooooooo much nicer and better to have then MX noise. I can honestly handle watching a completely underexposed scene cranked up to 6400 ISO, with Dragon Color, Red Logfilm, at 5K Full debayer IN MOTION with the Red Cine X noise reduction set to max. I can get a decent shot to my liking at this extreme settings. With Neat Video I can only imagine what kinds of possibilities there will be. And I have no doubt in my mind I can save underexposed shoots all the way up to 6400 ISO. Then again I like film grain and Dragon noise does not bother me (minus the red).

When the new update that Graeme is working on to reduce the red noise comes out......wow! I will be so thrilled because the noise is really spectacular in my opinion already.

I am so fucking glad I pulled the trigger on this baby. And to think I can shoot at 250 ISO in daylight with no IR pollution, no loss in DR, etc. Holly shit balls! I am thrilled. Can't wait to shoot my new projects with her ;)

Also, 5K upto 48fps or 60fps in WS is simply bad ass. The S35 coverage is spectacular and covers my Tokina 11-16 PL mount lens perfectly. And it just looks soooo goooood. Congrats RED. You guys really killed it with this camera sensor!!!!

When I get to shooting some worthwhile samples of stuff I will certainly add it to this thread ;)

congratulations Adam :)

That's what people should write when trying Dragon.
Everything is so greatly enhanced, you'd get used right away :)

Hi Adam,
I'm glad to hear how impressed you are with your Scarlet Dragon. I have been testing my camera for the last week and am not feeling the excitement. Overall my impressions are, the colour and dynamic range is what I expected but for me everything seems a bit soft and lots of dark areas alive with grain. When I put a unsharp mask on the picture gets to where I would be more happy with. I have been using 18-85mm red zoom, red primes and canon glass, results are similar. I have black balanced accordingly and tried most variables I can think of. Is there a particular post route you have been going thru, I have been focusing on rcx.

Cheers
Ian

Thanks guys :)

Have not had enough time to work with my pipeline, but it will mostly be premiere pro cc 2014 and some Redcine-X. I can tell you that 5K 23.98 Dragon Footage at 8:1 runs realtime full debayer on my Mac Pro system (2009 Upgraded 5,1 12-Core 128GB RAM w/ Titan Card).

The color & extra DR in the highlights makes the upgrade worthwhile in itself. The IR polution being a thing of the past is HUGE as well! Can't wait for the new firmware Graeme is working on. Once that Red noise is controled better, wow. I can't even imagine how insanely awesome Targaryen will be ;)

Yes, love the name ;)

Impressive is the right word... and YES.. WOW!!! fits pretty good too...
Feels like little Scarlet is all grown up... 5k is a blast and the Dragon images are IMPRESSIVE :)

Have a look at my first impressions and joy here:

Congrats Adam, I'm considering Scarlet to Epic or Scarlet to Scarlet Dragon Upgrade. What's your opinion?

Hehe thanks guys ;)

Rick - it is one hell of a sensor! Handles the highlights like magic, the roll off and over exposed look amazes me! Also, the color is mind blowing. So nice and accurate straight off the camera.

The only caveat to dragon is noisier shadows with the red sparkles...but that should improve with the next firmware update. The lowligh capabilities are not that different from MX overall, except that it looks more filmic ;)

I would go Dragon every time over an Epic MX!
