  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

ok, so after a LOT of posts, and research. I've BUILT my Premiere Editing System.. And it is good

A shout out to two people:

Jeff Kilgore who educated me that regardless of how many PCIe slots I have, there are only so many lanes.. This helped!

And to my bud Bruce Allen who convinced me that a DUAL Xeon is NOT always the best way to go, and that a 980x chip can do almost as well, and if overclocked.. Even better.. He was so right.

Motherboard:
MSI Big Bang Mobo...
Very nice.. Easy to set up, and an IDIOT OC button that really works.. Took my 3.33 Mhz processor and kicked it up to 4.3... Very nice.

EVGA Nvidia 480..
Of course this does not work with Premiere (Dave please skip to next paragraph now). Until you apply the hack, and then it runs like butter.. I LOVE IT.

I put in 12gb of RAM and will add another 12 when money comes along.

I bought a crucial 256gb SSD for my programs.. Jesus.. That really helps.

I bought some MONSTER COPPER cooler for the CPU.. Don't know a lot about them, but it's slick.

Now for the case, I chose a Supermicro with an 8 drive bay (complete with hot swap) and back plane.. I cannot afford a separate RAID system, so eventually I'll get an internal 8-port RAID card for this task (Any advice on which one would be great).

Not counting monitor, keyboard, and mouse. And without the RAID installed.. I am at $3,150.00 for this computer.

Here's a partial list of what I got.. The SSD is not on here, and that was $550. Also the CPU cooler which was $60

Hey Jay,

Thanks for the information and congratulations on putting it all together! Just for some context, did you build this editing system with the Epic in mind or just the Red One?

I did ask for a stocking filler from my other half. I hope she listened.

Haven't seen it yet but sure it is very informative. I like Noah's book, but gotta get the whole arsenal.

Your machine looks nicely spec'd. I built one earlier on in the year and works like a dream. I ended up just getting the i7 930 though. Been thinking about overclocking but as I know nothing about it, I am very reluctant to try. In fact if I managed to research properly I could but would rather get someone who knows how but then you have to find someone trustworthy to do it and where do you look for that kind of thing. Plus would probably need to boost up my cooling. Just using a corsair closed path watercooling at the moment. Don't want to blow my kit.

I'm in your boat Tim.. I have NO idea how to overclock.. But the MSI board has that button, and I can do that!!

Jay

980X is overkill. You can easily get that horse power with a 970 or a 950 with a good aircooling.

I'd never choose a GTX 480 : too hot (and unstable), too noisy and not officially supported by Adobe.

I got 2 x SOC Gigabyte 470 with a special PCB/cooling solution.

nice system Jay!

I got something very similar, three of them now in fact, that I built with advice from fellow Reduser Paul Leeming, and I'm very happy. I went the extra step and got two SSD and RAIDed them for the OS and programs! Photoshop opens in 3.5 seconds, Premiere in 7 :-) The GTX 480 is fine, with the hack, it is now "supported" by Premiere. and hey, one of the important things is to make sure you got fast DDR3 memory, I also got 12 GB on my systems, but through overclocking I make sure they are running at 2000, and boy that helps a lot.

...and BTW, last I checked, you could build 3 of these systems for price of a single MAC of almost comparable performance!

THanks for posting Jay,

Which CPU cooler did you get?

EDIT: We have good luck with the areca RAID cards

Tomorrow we're going to try to build our system into a HACKINTOSH!!

Wish me luck

Jay

My question was what OS were you running. Hope it works out. Keep us posted. If I can ever get a good gig I plan to build one, and the MSI board you're using is one of my contenders.

No worries Justin.. I've been telling people you're paying me to build it.
:coolgleamA:

Ha Ha!!

It wasn't me, it was the one-armed man!

I had thought about adding another ssd and having a dual system. Haven't the time to play though.

OOOhhh...good luck. I too am looking at building a "dual purpose" system a la PC Premiere and Hackintosh for Resolve...let us know how it goes.

I am looking forward to building a Sandy Bridge hackintosh. The release is imminent.
