  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

MY NEW COMP!

Sounds cool, I'd be interested to know what hardware works and doesnt and what extra kexts and hacks are required for that particular setup.

Seems a little odd to me though, paying $3000 when that is about the same price as a similar mac pro... If you were building it yourself for $1000 id understand, since I'm considering doing that myself.

Who's building it for you?

BTW no SSD? probably would be worth it for a system drive as long as there are no compatibility issues.

the comparable mac would be closer to 6k.

I might go SSD

Wouldnt it be about equivalent to a $2499 mac pro plus $200 of ram, a $100 gpu, and a $70 hard drive? Avoiding apples 800% markup on upgrades is trivial, but building a pro hackintosh is not.

Any idea what voltage you need for the overclock and if you have to disable turbo boost for it to work? I imagine turbo boost would be a problem when overclocking, but it is definitely a nice feature to have if you can keep it.

SSD is definitely worthwhile since its crazy to have a top of the line computer and still be waiting for a single hdd's to seek (or even spin up) when you want to launch a program. itd probably go further toward making your user experience feel snappier than any other upgrade. Just make sure you get the right one. I think the new ones with the Indilinx controller are supposed to be good.

closest apple version...
one 2.93 quad core intel
12 gig ram
raid card
1tb 7200 rpm drive
nvidia gt 120 512mb
= $5149.00

this comp
1 Intel Core i7 1366 "Nehalem" 920 Quad Core Processor @ 4.25 GHz
12 gigs ram
raid card
1 tb 7200 rpm drive
nvidia 250 1024mb
+ more ports for firewire 800 and esata

= $2800.00

better video card
faster processor
more ram
cheaper...
where are you getting your baseline mac price out of this?

Oh, i was going by:

Mac pro 2.66Ghz (same cpu you are using), 3GB RAM, useless GPU = $2499
6x2GB DDR3 ECC SDRAM = $264
WD Caviar Black 1TB = $95
EVGA GTS 250 = $120

Total = $2978

I didnt notice the raid card and backplane. Thatd be another:
Highpoint 2640x4 = $90

backplane wouldnt work in a mac pro but you could just use a similar card with external ports plus an external JBOD enclosure ~$300

Of course it is more complicated than that since mac pro doesnt support that memory configuration, so it would be a bit different. Plus youd have an extra 3GB of ram and 640GB hdd hanging around that came with the mac pro.

You mentioned turbo is on at that speed? is the 4.25GHz for quad core mode or a turbo boosted dual/single core speed? that seems like a rather high OC that would undoubtedly require overvolting and possibly instability. It just seems weird to me that that high of an overclock would be stated before the system has been built since overclockability is very dependent upon what silicon you happen to get by luck, especially on a 60% overclock like that.

Of course a mac pro would be tougher to overclock and the components would be quite different. So its not such an easy comparison. Then again the price probably isnt bad for a custom PC with those components thats being built by someone else. I was just surprised since I'm used to building computers myself so the components looked like probably worth around $1500 for your build, but that doesnt account for all the work of putting it together and getting hackintosh working on it.

Actually i just plugged the components into newegg and it costs $1,663.88 (i wouldn't be surprised if whoever is building it for you is buying all his parts there since they magically carry exactly all those components :) ) for everything not including extra cables you might need. Thanks for the list though, might be helpful if i end up building one myself.

This might help:

http://secure.newegg.com/WishList/PublicWishDetail.aspx?WishListNumber=15385928

That should be everything, and the listed price doesnt account for over $60 in rebates. Though the case im not sure about, since there are several that look the same in a similar price range. I was just basing it on the picture you attached. Also, you can save $15 by buying the cpu/motherboard in a combo but i couldnt add that to a wishlist. You'll have an extra psu since the cases all seem to come with a psu, but thats not a bad thing to have a backup of.

When i said you might need additional cables, i was just thinking i didnt check what cables came with what, but really you shouldnt need any since the motherboard and raid card come with plenty of sata cables and the gpu comes with the gpu-molex power adapter.

I too have got a similar system going for my hackintosh. Im using a GTX 295 which is quite a surprise :P Im going to make a large post on it soon. I was also going to provide detailed instructions on how I got it going with the hardware I'm using (if im alowed).

Whats ur motherboard set up to get that overclock?? Also whats your full cpu load temperatures.

Noah, with EFi, Hackintoshes no longer have problems and headaches, please do research. EFI is a great way of configuring a HackPro, its the same way that a real mac is configured from the Apple factory. Its 100% reliable, but not the easiest thing to do.

haha maybe ill just build it myself. if thats the case

I'm glad that I probably inspired someone...

If you guys, need performance numbers there from my setup which is very similar one thread below... it's just flys...

I believe Zakaree you will agree...
