  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

My Mac Pro crashed and burned

Re-install OSX. Hold shift while your booting to get 'safe mode' to move things around before you wipe the drive and start over.

I know of a certain group of individuals that have a MAC OS X install Live CD, comes in handy...

No, pretty sure mobile me messed it up. It was constantly telling me that sync was having problems, and I couldn't eject the idisk. Then it was saying I was having keychain access problems.

If you have unrelated sets of software misbehaving, often the file table on your disk is becoming corrupted, and needs to be repaired. The problem often manifests itself when you install a program or do updates, which then causes people to blame the software updated...but the stage was set and underway before.

First try disk repair in Disk Utility, and if that does not repair and errors, then maybe try Disk Warrior or something similar. Do this first before you try an install of OSX. If you try to do something like that and your disk is really corrupted, it will make the corruption much worse and endanger successful recovery. Just check with Disk Utility first, takes 10 seconds.

This is a VERY common problem. If you go to work on it now, you can fix it fast and easy before the file becomes so damaged the software can't figure out how to repair it.

I had a Mac Pro go down a bit over a week ago. Wouldn't do anything other than power up and sit there. Would not post or even attempt to boot, even disconnecting everything but the video card and RAM, it wouldn't post, wouldn't reset the pRAM or EFI... Nothing. Swapped the video card, still nothing. So... I took it to the local Apple Store.

Too bad I can't just order replacement parts under warranty from Apple myself, I would've had the thing fixed a week ago. I have another Mac Pro, but I'm out my CalDigit RAID and my LTO-4 until the one comes back from repair.

Just had my Mac Pro go down 3 weeks out of warranty. It was a bad video card. I missed the deadline to register for Applecare, but Apple was kind enough to cover the repair after a little pushing. I think the 2600 video card issue may be a common problem with the 2008 machines.

I had 2 macs do this. I ran all disc tools on earth to fix them, but nothing did. I had to re-install all with a new sytem. Pretty sure it was a bad encryption script/virus that did this.

Got the system fixed. Had some boot sector problems on my primary HDD. Don't know what they keychain issue was, but after deleting the whole library full of keychains I no longer have that problem. iDisk is still messing up, but I guess I'll wait to fix that.

We make a SuperDupa backup each month and can boot off that if the need arises. And the LE version is free.

I recently got a 17" Mac Book Pro that started acting funny, freezing up at random times.

Put it in for warranty service, but after 5 days they couldn't figure it out. I told them I was leaving and needed it for a nation-wide doco the next day, and they gave me a brand new machine!

Best service ever.

Try getting that kind of sympathy or service from DELL! :head_explode:

Apple has earned my respect and business time and time again.

This system is even more dead than that. Can't even get the chime when turning it on, can't boot to any media, can't get to any diagnostic tools, can't reset the nvram... No active diagnostic/status LEDs on the logic board. It's toast. I pulled my internal drives and cloned them for safe measure. Put the primary in a SATA to FW800 enclosure and booted the other Mac pro with it for grins. Also needed to get to a few documents I hadn't backed up yet.

Just an update...

They're replacing my system. And talk about impressive service, I'm getting a new Nehalem mac pro - 8 core 2.93Hz, they agreed to give me the upgrade to the ATI 4870 card and 16GB RAM instead of the RAID card, which I wasn't using in the Mac Pro that died, but returned to them with the system.
