First I want to say, I am one of the original investors in this dream called RED. I put a deposit on camera serial number 202! I was one of the early ridders of this roller-coaster. But the camera never took off for me, so about a year after my purchase, I sold it, and lost about $10,000 on the total investment (tripods, lenses, etc included).

But I did not give up on my RED dream. I kept and eye on RED and checked the REDuser site, waiting for the time to be right for me to come back in. About a month ago I decided it was that time, but at this point the serial numbers where in the high 6900s, so I figured why not wait for them to get to the 7,000 mark (call me superstitious).

On Monday, October 26, I learned from my RED rep that they had reached that mark, and immediately placed my order, putting down the 10% deposit. The order was just for the camera and CF module, since I had already ordered and received the rest of the stuff from RED and E.T., so I was just waiting for the camera.

As you know, the way it works at RED is that you place the order, then you wait for them to assign you a serial number and tell you what your balance is so you can pay for your order. And as you probably also know, that does not happen instantly, it takes them a few days.

Well, the week went by with not a word from RED and on Friday there was the big announcement that if you had not paid for the camera in full by the 29th you where not going to get the same trade in benefits as everyone else before you.

All i can say is: that is really f#@&*d up!

First, I had already bought everything but the camera, and had placed an order with a deposit, plus i had another $5,000 sitting on my account at RED already waiting to pay for the camera. After I have given a 10% deposit, they change the rules of the game on me!!

Second, what kind of crap is this, changing the program retroactively? I have never heard of that before. Normally, they give you an end date, and you have a some time to act!

I was waiting for them to send me the final bill so I could pay for it! How is this MY fault?!?

I am so incensed with the way RED decided to do this I have sent all the stuff back. I can't believe they would pull something like this, especially to someone that believed in them when most of you, yes, most of you here where just waiting on the side lines to see what would happen with this camera company, waiting to see if they could pull it off.

I am really disappointed on RED.

that's too bad Lenny,, I was reading your post thinking about the tragedy in the end... waiting for it.

I would hope that RED would work with you but seeing as you sent everything back, maybe that's too late... and maybe there will be other opportunities to be had.

Thank you, Jon.

I guess this would be easier solved with a chat with brent @ red dot com than over the board. If a solution is what you want.

Sorry to hear.

Hi,

I hope you have not broken any of the factory seals & obtained a 'RMA' no on the goods you returned:-

7a. Factory Seal – If the factory seal on the product has been broken, a return will not be accepted, unless Red gives specific approval for such a return after evaluation (subject to $500 evaluation fee) and the returned product is subject to a 30% restocking fee. All equipment must be shipped in as new condition and in the original shipping materials. Refunds are subject to an evaluation of the merchandise upon receipt at Red as defined above, in addition to other tests to ascertain condition of returned goods. A refund less the restocking fee will be provided within thirty (30) days of completion of evaluation of goods at Red.

Lenny,

Sorry to hear that you are upset.

Did you try to speak to your Rep before sending everything back?

I did, of course, but the answer was:
At this point because of the fact that the camera has not been paid for before October 29th, we cannot make an exception.

there is always a busy body. no, don't worry, i did not break any factory seals. i did not open a single box.

No word from RED, Lenny? Reading through emails between you and your rep plus discussing the situation with him, I see a different picture. I will not elaborate publicly but instead send you an email.

I think a lot of people have lost sight of the reason the upgrade program was created in the first place. Epic-X was designed as a thank you to all the early adopters who were forced to deal with technical shortcomings including faulty audio boards, glitches in camera builds, etc. It was also to compensate for the fact that, when they purchased their cameras, these camera owners had no idea that RED would develop the DSMC program, which somewhat undermines the idea that the RED ONE would never be obsolete.
But these things don't really apply to anyone who has purchased a RED in the last six months. The cameras come with new audio boards. Most of the glitches have been worked out of the software. And the DSMC program has been public for a year. So in my mind, RED doesn't owe you any notice of a cutoff date (although Jim basically gave us one when he stated that people will soon wished they owned a RED ONE). You are lucky that you will get to use the RED ONE for six months, then trade in the body for full value later. That is definitely not a right. It is a privilege.

You are so silly. I not only went through the faulty audio boards, glitches, and everything else. i went through waiting for a camera for a year and a half after i gave $1,000 of my hard earned money, while everyone else around me is making fun of me saying how they are never going to pull it off. So don't tell me about being there, you silly man.

Business is business, and it should be conducted as such. i made a business decision to sell my camera when i did and i don't have to answer to silly men like you about it. Stop kissing RED ass, you look like you are wearing lipstick.

I was a customer before you even heard of them, and have been a big fan all along. But I cannot blindly agree with every decision they make, and this last one was a big one, in my opinion.

I am a big fan of RED and what they have accomplished, but I don't spend all my time reading every little post Jim writes ("although Jim basically gave us one when he stated that people will soon wished they owned a RED ON") and i also did not drink the Koolaid.

Lenny, I get why you are frustrated, but your posts come across as arrogant and ignorant. Do you really believe this will get you anywhere?

You made a business decision and so did RED. And neither of you have to answer to anybody.

Dude. You made a conscious decision to forfeit owndership of a RED camera. Get over it.

My buddy had a Range Rover. Hoe got invited to owners events with instruction and freebies. He's no longer a registered owner. He no longer gets invites.

Seems simple enough.

i am frustrated, sorry about coming across as arrogant and, well, ignorant, maybe i am, but i don't think so.

i don't know why so many of you have an issue with the fact that i sold my first red, what does that have to do with what happened now? even if i had not sold it or never had one, the point is i had a deposit and was waiting for red to give me the final price so that i could buy it. if there was an option to pay for the whole thing when i ordered it i would have, but such options does not exist. so while i am waiting for them they close the border. that is messed up.
