My Impressions on Epic M

hm3f.jpg

Another beauty of Epic M8. This was my first time using Master Primes, as well! Ketch has some beautiful lenses.

Frank, we definitely shot some HDRx. It's of huge interest to me as well. Right now I'm just waiting on the RCX update for PC, then I will dive into our HDRx clips.

but seriously. do you think you ever need to use your 5D again? in regards to timelapse? i KNOW the functions have not been enabled but when i look at that i think, "this is all you need!" the technology everyone has been waiting for to take motion control timelapse cinematography to the next level.

Julio, that is just a temporary solution for now. IMHO, I think it would be great if someone could manufacture a small carbon-fiber top handle for the Epic that is integrated with the LCD. Just my opinion, but I would also love to have a slightly larger touch-screen LCD. I've grown accustom to my 7" Red LCD. I have no idea if something like this is already in the works.

Richard, I'm with you. The advantage I would have with shooting night timelapse on an Epic vs a Canon DSLR is that I could use super-wide Master Primes like the 12mm and gain a couple of stops of light vs my 14mm Canon prime which is f/2.8! I'm just waiting to hear from Deanan about the timelapse features. I have another Epic M shoot planned for early March, on which I will have a 12mm Master Prime. So I've got my fingers crossed.

serious, i mean i love dslr lenses in every way possible. but as fans of classic or modern cinema, it's the only logical direction to take. i don't even think it would be at all "artificial" if you will, but more natural than what is being produced already by dslr lenses. you'll be able to shoot the, "barry lyndon" of timelapse photography, hahaha.

@ Richard

The FOV will differ quite a bit between the Epic and a FF DSLR, if that's of any importance...

@ Tom
Looking foreward to seeing your Epic timelapses and HDRx clips!

And don't forget about HDRx™ Tom, which I think will broaden the spectrum of surreal timelapses attainable, or at least provide a very smooth transition into the clipping point of your choice.

I remember that shot of your team sitting by a fire where stars were exposed but the flames were blown out. Which of your videos is that one in?

EDIT: Found it, it is on Rapture. The cabin on the Blimp landing might have benefited from an other stop.

What a slick little set-up you boys have there. The idea of using MPs as part of a field set-up is awesome. Can't wait to give it a try.

MP's have always been my favorite lenses, and while some finds them Big, since I have worked a lot with the 200m F2 and 300mm,
as well as a lot of work with the 400 f/2.8, I am used to large lenses, and the smaller Size of Epic makes it Ideal to bring the MP's on
any shoot,

Those that know me know that I don't compromise on Image Quality, and Tom can attest of the Battery smooth Manual Focus of the MP's and
they Rubberized ring makes them Ideal for Manual Focusing ;)

You all may have noticed a bunch of posts that have been deleted. These EPIC threads are being read by thousands of people. The "omg" and "wtg" posts are part of the spirit of Reduser... but for these threads, the mods are trying to keep the posts as directly info-related as possible so everyone can read the relevant stuff quickly and easily.

But share as much excitement as you want via PMs... : )

Stunning photo Tom.

Was it shot wide open? Or with focus at infinity? Something seems odd, I expected it to be sharper at 5k. Though I saw a chart a few days ago that suggested Master Prime's sweet spot was 4k, and with 5k bayer we are probably seeing a nice little chuck beyond 4k resolved.

4k M-X with the latest Graeme sauce resolved about 3.7~3.8k right? (I can't remember exactly) And 4.5k was certainly beyond 4k resolved.

Could 5k be a little more than MPs can manage?

Please someone tell me I am wrong. Hopefully someone that knows MPs very well.

One thing is certain. That shot is beautiful.

Edit: I opened in PS, zoomed to 50%, in 32-bit, and applied a tiny bit of sharpening, and the whole thing jumped at me without really starting to look sharpened at all. Not that I was suggesting it to begin with, but it is clear as day that MPs will r-o-c-k on Epic.

It looks soft to me, too. I cannot remember at all what stop we were at, because we were changing the settings and framerates with almost every take. That photo was taken from a shot at 96fps, so I'm guessing the iris was opened pretty wide. Looks like I also missed focus a bit on the main tree in the foreground, or that I took a screengrab from later in the dolly move when we have moved past the focus point. I'll dig through our frames some more tomorrow and see what else we got.

I've been playing with HDRx all day and lost track of time!

Okay. That's it. That's the one. The shot that sells the Epic. Masterful. Pure bloody cinema.

Yeah I do think that when Tom gets his own Epic there will be a lot of.. jesus that makes the camera look fantastic shots. But I do think tom could shoot with a PixelVision and make it look good.

This particular frame grab is form one of my favorite scenes of that day shots, Epic truly does bring something out of what you
are shooting at, and off curse the 18mm Master Prime is a Jule all together, the two make for a serious Image capturing system ;)

Can't wait for the HDRx of this shots as well, the contrast form the Ground alitly snowed on, and the Tree to the Blue Morning Sky
and the Sunrising Sun shining on the mountain are just beautiful, and the Moon with the cloud overing atop that mountain just
make this composition a favorite.

Thanks again Tom to take us up to Joshua Tree enjoyed shooting with you and Epic M8 a lot, too bad that Steve could
not be with us, next time ;)

Ketch, you left your big GITZO tripod here...! I think that means you will have to bring Epic M8 back out to play when you have a day off! :)

i see a bit of noise here, do you guys remember what ISO was set to? thanks

Noise? I opened this in PS and looked at each channel. Super clean. What exactly are you looking at?
