Little background on the project. We had 2 weeks with 9 professional wakeboarders in the Philippines. There was a small budget for a movie/short film from this trip. I knew I really wanted to shoot on RED and this was right when the BT Scarlet deal went live. I bought one of the first ones as soon as Jarred posted it. Pretty crazy to buy a camera that I really hadn't used that much before and head off to the other side of the world to shoot it.

I was freaking didn't know if I had everything I needed. I literally got the camera 5 days before I left for the Philippines. It was crazy. We were off to the other side of the world and it was quite the ride.

Only Lenses I used:

Canon 70-200mm 2.8is II sometimes with 1.4x extender
Canon 24-70mm 2.8 II
Tokina 11-16mm 2.8

Had a very basic scarlet kit. 1 64gig SSD and 1 48gig SSD. Had my macbook and a 4tb redundant raid array.

I had been reading the forums for years and just learning everything I could over the years until the day when I could purchase a scarlet (Shot with Canon 60d/5d for years). Being in the field with the camera was a totally different story though. I had to make it work because the client who funded the project was basically expecting a 20minute movie no matter what.

I learned as I went and I checked my footage in RCX everytime I dumped some cards. I tried to do slight color grading on the go to keep up with all the footage I would have.

Its funny how a lot of people are scared to jump into the RED workflow/ RED world because it seems really scary/complicated when you just read the forums. Now that I have been using the camera almost daily for the last couple months the workflow is so simple. I'm constantly learning new tricks but I think anyone with some decent camera knowledge can pick up a Scarlet and go out and shoot with it. Will you get amazing footage right away? Probably not but it sure is fun trying.

Investing in RED has already payed off huge as I am almost ready to buy an EPIC. I've scored a couple gigs that I never would of gotten without my knowledge of RED workflow and the camera. I can't wait to see the images I can produce this year with this camera. My last movie on iTunes was shot entirely on Canon DSLR so its just going to be a huge difference in quality with my next release.

If your on the fence thinking about buying a scarlet... Just do it! You won't regret it.

Looking forward to seeing your RED EPIC work... You gonna love having slomotion with sports like this. :)

Nice Job Patrick! but I would second Peter's comments - the color grading is all over the place, meaning you might want to consider to stay within 2-3 looks overall and provide some continuity. But overall super awesome footage - just 5 days after purchase - fast learner indeed!

Thanks guys. I learned a lot from this shoot. The all over color grades is mostly from me trying to color grade footage at the end of each day and learning more and more. The lighting and conditions changed everyday as well. So what looked good the day before didn't look as good as that day.

In the future I will probably wait till I am home and have a better idea of the look I want.

Could of defiently made the piece together with more time on the editor but budget was tight and couldn't really afford to spend more time on it then what was needed as I had more paying projects lined up needing to be completed.

Also I shot everything on the Jetski hand held with no water housing

Just DSMC Sidehandle and RED Sidehandle and 5inch LCD!

WHAT a F%$#^ LOL  are you serious, on a Jetski - Lets update your title -- Fast learner and very Brave!!

2 Person jetski riding around a big circle. With a hung over wakeboarder driving following another hung over wakeboarder traveling at 22mph with a large swinging rope. I usually was shooting at 24mm-40mm. Shot everything in 4k 24fps.

Seriously great stuff. Not only did it look great but the content was compelling on top of it. I have to know what songs you used, by the way!

ha Samir! I've been shooting around water for about 6 years. Theres always a risk but as long as you know how the water splashes etc youll be fine.
