  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

My Alchemy settings are not transferring over to Premiere Pro

Unfortunately, Alchemy is currently not supported in Premiere Pro.

It's been mentioned many times before in the original effects thread. Alchemy is currently an RCX feature.

Any idea on how long until I can use Alchemy in Adobe Premiere? I am currently editing a 4K film in PP, and I really, really need Alchemy! :ihih:

Hi Jon,

I understand your frustration. RED moves fast, which benefits you in that we can get updates to you quickly and usually for free (like in REDCINE-X). The downside is that it can take our partners a while to add such functionality to their programs. Alchemy was released pretty recently so it will be a while before other apps support it.

Tom: unfortunately we don't have an ETA on that, but do expect it to take some time as right now it's still being moved from REDCINE-X in to the SDK our partners use.

If you need it now you will need to render out in REDCINE-X and load that in to Premiere. Sorry. We're moving as fast as we all can.

Thanks,

Rob, thanks. But it's safe to say that Alchemy is in fact being moved into the SDK as we speak?

Tom: yep, it's one of the million things I'm working on with the team :)

Can't you guys cut in PP and then XML -> RCX, grade and then export the timeline as whatever you want (like ProRes 444)?

The drawback will be the loss of some effects etc in a complex timeline but at least it'd let you render stuff out and maybe piece it back together again in PP

We are editing in FCP (dnxhd 36mbit transcodes), exporting an xml, adding a basic grade (including alchemy) in rcx, rendering as open exr, importing the fcp xml to premiere to save a project file, then importing exrs and premiere project file to complete the final grade, effects, titles, and retiming in after effects.

Alchemy is not something we need for editing, only for coloring which happens after picture lock in our work flow.

I'm really hoping to see Alchemy added to Resolve too.

I'll be honest and say, well, maybe I'm missing something, but there doesn't seem to be anything you can do in alchemy that you can't do with lift/gamma/gain or curves, and these would give you more control. It seems to exactly the same as spinning the L/G/G wheels in good relation to each other (but good is not always the same definition, which is why I prefer setting all this by hand).

If I am missing something, please let me know.

To my eye, alchemy is basically a prebaked curve tool, and clarity is a prebaked unsharp mask. RedGamma and RedGamma2 are also prebaked curves. However the makers of these tools have put in a long time to refine these curves, so if they match the desired look for the grade, they can save a lot of time in post for a non-colorist. You always have the option of starting from scratch. I have graded a short film starting with redlog. Except in special cases, I wouldn't do that again.

Wouldn't it be possible to export all the clips graded with Alchemy in RCX out to ProRes or DNXHD for Premiere and have the grades baked in?
