Currently, the production house we're working with supplies us with MXF files, AFE files, and ALEs. We batch import the AFEs/MXF media into Avid and merge the ALEs for full RED metadata. Then do our offline. Usually, we generate an EDL and use this in Rubber Monkey to generate DPX files for our Inferno artist to use in the final online. This workflow isn't always efficient for our online editor when dealing with music videos that have tons of long fades and funky effects.

Thus, at this point we'd like to utilize AMA and relink a high res cut in the Avid before giving an uncompressed none QuickTime to our colorist. This way he only needs to color correct and not have to conform and create new effects for everything.

So far I've tried to relink to original AMA but it doesn't seem to work. Is this because you can only relink to AMA when AMA was originally used? I'm assuming this is the case. Is there extra hidden metadata in consolidated/transcoded media that states that AMA was used?

The issue at this stage is that AMA references the R3D names in the "Source File" column while all other methods put the R3D name in the "Tape". In a future release there will be the ability to conform via AMA across "Source File" and "Tape".

EDL Manager already supports EDL generation based on "Tape" and "Source File" so all existing EDL based workflows will still work.

So I'm assuming the Source File column can't be modified. If that's the case then my proposed workflow won't work.

No, "Source File" cannot be modified, added, etc. At this time, your workflow won't work.

how i do this is following:

using mikael lubtchansky's scripts: http://www.reduser.net/forum/showthread.php?t=42154

this app will generate from your edl a lua script and you will have then your timeline in redcine-x. after that you can export from there higher res DNxHD MXF for example and reconnect them. or you export uncompressed QT and batch import them on your offline project.

hope that helps a little
best,
rainer

As long as you roundtrip out to the original sources using the LUA script or Monkey and other methods, you can regenerate native MXF media from REDCINE X and relink the sources in Avid to your original sequence. This is described in the Avid/RED whitepaper which was for RocketCine, but workflow wise, the steps are the same.
