  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

MX Upgrade Yields Green Images, Grain

Paul,

When I first looked at the side by side it was an MX only Build for the MX camera vs. Build 21 on the M-Sensor.

First noticable softness was on side by side identical calibrated monitors off each camera.

Then we took tiff frames from each camera through RCX and processed both with the new color science REDGAMMA and REDCOLOR.

Here the frames showed similar to what we were seeing on the monitor with the M being a tad sharper, but not as pleasant in color rendition.

Then we "contacted printed" each frame" About 14"x7" inches and compared those frames as well. Same result as the tiff M a bit sharper.

A note that it was all the same cooke glass on both camera's so I think it is a very good test.

Over 500 ISO the M-X is a much better sensor, but well lit and under 500ISO I think it's almost a tie.

The MX gives you much more creative freedom when it comes to where and how you can capture images.

That's my little test. I generally don't make statements like the one I made unless I personally have done the test and seen the results.

David
Thanks for the details David. It's a strange result. Both cameras were focused using 100% zoom to ensure best sharpness and to eliminate any FFD discrepancy?

I'm genuinely curious because so far I'm seeing more resolved resolution from M-X than our old M sensor. Plus Red themselves have said the new OLPF gives sharper images.

Also the pixel pitch is 5.4 microns(?) on both cameras so besides the new OLPF they should both theoretically be capable of the same resolved resolution.

Again, thanks for the info. I love delving into the nitty gritty of this stuff to get the best possible images from cameras, so forgive me if I'm too curious!

Cheers from Tokyo,

Paul

There is a new OLPF with the new sensor and I felt the same as David about sharpness. I did a test between the two with the same Ultra Prime 50mm on a chroma dumond. Both were flange depth tested with the denz system. One flaw was that they both ended up resolving the flutes to the ends! There seemed to be as much resolution between the two, but the M-X seemed just a little softer while the M sensor had more artifacting in the fine lines. The good thing about the M-X sensor is that it responds to sharpening much better than the M, in my opinion.

Need to generate new proxies. Put in new Redcode.QT.component and it did help a bit, but footage in Red Alert still looks yellow as hell, yet QT proxies made through it seem okay. There's still a lot of inconsistency. Hard to guess a rough one light grade in Red Alert when it looks like shit.

Sorry if I sound on the fence about this.

Ya'll do know that there is a quicktime codec for the new mx color science right?!?!

http://red.cachefly.net/redcinex/REDCODE_QT_v41_b1.zip

installation instructions:

1) if needed extract the downloaded zip file by double clicking on it

2) copy the now extracted REDCODE.QT.component to the /Library/QuickTime folder to overwrite the old codec

It is possible the REDCODE QuickTime codec is in use by the system. In this case you will have to reboot the system before installation will succeed.

Plus the adobe plug in.

Red alert will not show mx footage correctly. Period. Move to Redcinex. only way to go.

The good thing about the M-X sensor is that it responds to sharpening much better than the M, in my opinion.

Yes,

I agree with this. Both camera's have benefitted greatly to the New color Science and the new build. I agree that the M-X responds in a more pleasant way to sharpening.

All this of course is part of the finer details of watching a baby grow and evolve into something more refined all the time.

I love that the new sensor only enhanced the aesthetic of what we were used to with the RED M image.
