  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

MX to Epic-W Upgraders.

I agree the older RED's are still fantastic cameras - well above and beyond delivery specs.

Lifetime networks just shot a feature down here a few months ago - and an associate of mine was the DP - Still Rocking his Red ONE Mysterium!

$20K two years after shelling out $20K to upgrade from Scarlet to Epic doesn't work for me, not including the cost of new SSD, etc. I'm still shooting an awful lot on my Epic and have yet to have any clients or directors ask about the newer Red models. Until that starts happening, I'm staying put. I think we've reached a point of diminishing returns with respect to digital cinema cameras in general. 8K/6K is impressive and all, but when you're shooting web spots that most people are viewing on handheld devices, it's a bit overkill.

As an Epic MX shooter I was definitely excited about the upgrade but decided not to do it because I already have a great camera that shoots 5k 96fps raw. Plus I keep $30k in the bank which is always nice. Was also thinking I could get some really nice lenses for $30k if I wanted to spend some money.

The helium noise improvements and color are the biggest things I'll really be missing out on, not so much the 8k actually. 5k is plenty fine for all my work. I'm hoping a scarlet helium 5k 60fps camera comes out (much cheaper than EW) then I'm sold.

I will sell/upgrade in the next year or two just not the time now unfortunately. The way Red is going tho I'll be on board for the long foreseeable future.

My DSMC 1 brain may not have huge mileage on it but I think having the new body combined with a higher resolution and color science makes it worth the trade-in.

The new body alone was not enough to switch me to Weapon 6K. 8K simply pushes it over.

Still, a new body with zero 'wear and tear', improved fan, internal audio, no crappy adapter module, cable-less power and display, lighter weight, auto blackshading, better I/O relocation, AND higher resolution than a mere side-step; makes this worth a trade-in.

The old camera was good. This is simply improved and zero hours use again.

I am keeping my viewfinder and non-touch screen (I have a 7" Pro - and prefer them - as I'm fast with the menus - plus they are better in glare - and no thumbprints). Will need a lemo adapter for each. Aside from that - the only other accessory I'm keeping is the Anton Bauer Gold mount I had (though I need a new Quick Back to make it work). I think everything else has to go...

So what parts from my Scarlet MX can I use for my Epic - W?

batteries (v-mount or AB), media if your scarlet is using mini mags, monitors (with lemo adapters), lens mounts, and of course the universal AKS like matte boxes tripods etc
