  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Mx:d whoooo hooo

Agreed MX Rocks!

Shot this last night with very little available light after sunset in my kitchen. Could barely see anything on the RED LCD at 800 ASA, f/2.8, 1/48th. Brought it into REDCineX and it looked like the first screen shot. Had noise when I graded in RedCineX but then ran it through Neat Video DeNoise and viola. (See Second Image)

I honestly still can't believe I was able to get such a great final image out of so little light. Now I just have to figure out how I can "see" what I'm shooting and manage focus when I can't hardly see anything on the LCD. :)

red ones with MX sensor will have a long life span..

i know everyone is selling off their red ones.. thinking they are dead in the water because of EPIC.. but honestly.. its the SAME sensor..

ill give someone a thousand bucks if they can honestly tell the difference between a red one mx and a epic x..

(in theory)

Have you guys shot anything outside in harsh sunlight? I've been watching the boards ever since MX, and I can't find any images shot at outdoor light levels, high contrast scene, with flesh tones.

If you've got it, would love to see how MX responds.

You mean like f/22 60fps 1/120th or with a 2.0 ND Filter or something? It's easy to show off the low light level performance of a sensor because you only have so many options, fast lens, open up the aperture as much as you possibly can and shoot at 24fps 1/48th shutter speed. When you are shooing outdoor midday, there are so many variations for exposure. What in particular are you interested in seeing? Are you concerned the MX is too sensitive for high-noon at the OK Coral? That comes down to a matter of filtration, f-stop, shutter speed and whether shooting slow motion or not.

RED MX is so much better in daylight applications. You get a lot less IR pollution and the highlights don't nearly seem to clip out as bad.. Way better dynamic range. I recently used an M sensor Red on a job and ugh.. how gross... lol

I just got mine on Tuesday...and my initial testing bears out what Rick says. I shot part of my kitchen which had direct sunlight on a white cupboard (melamine), on a black Pelican case with the open door to a dark (unlit) room in the background. The MX handled the harsh contrast way better than the regular sensor could have.

we have shot 60 jobs with our MX in every possible scenario including underwater, snow, indoor low light, outdoor bright sunlight. in fact the tests we did in january were some of the harshest conditions because of the speed of the skateboarders and the dramatic light changes in the malibu canyons...have no fear MX is here...

The low light situations tend to be low contrast. On previous R1 shoots, we'd always run out out of of headroom in high contrast outdoor scenes.

We were shooting in full sun and the contrast put the skin tones down in the ugly desaturated part of the sensor. It was a struggle to pull them back out of that flat gray death zone.

It also seems that the sensor has different saturation characteristics depending on exposure. So in a high key, high contrast scene, where does 18% fall within the exposure range when you keep the bright highlights?
