The content is great, but on my monitor (pretty good reference monitor) the blacks aren't anywhere near black. They are well elevated on FCP's scopes.

Which is fine - might be a grading choice given the name of the song is Bleaching Sun, but it does expose the noise.

Go to :09, :10 and :014 - you can really see the noise there. And pretty much throughout. I downloaded the 260 meg which is 720P. After a scrunch like that the noise should be nonexistent which makes me wonder about underexposure - but maybe raising the blacks like that did it. (apologies for being a nitpick - the video itself is great)

I hate to be "that one guy"...

I enjoyed watching the treatment with the Cricket motif. The color grading could have gone a bit further. But solid camera work.

It was stylistic decision to keep the grade quite flat. Its appropriate for the clips mood and is in keeping with the directors treatment. And yes there is grain added. Slomo mostly at 50fps.

ditto

As stated the grade was a creative choice and the additional noise is probably the result of the added 'grain' effect. We weren't supplied with an official HD copy so some of the noise issues may be from our attempts to provide a decent file but keeping the size manageable.

Yeah I had to underexpose a good amount especially for the interiors and pointing into the sky. When you have a limited amount of lighting power to balance the scene its difficult to hold everything in such high contrast situations , something always gives. But the treatment called for smokey blacks so I chose to live with the noise. More grain was added later anyhow.

Not sure, that would be a question for Puck at Perceptual engineering. But there was quite a bit of Flame work carried out on the clip for various shots (not including the addition of grain).

Cool video, but I have to join some of the others in inquiring about the noise issues. Wonder if adding the grain onto an already noisy image (some shots exhibit more than others) is counterproductive. I'd like to see this with a different grade, some adjustments made in REDCINE, etc. and see if you might get a bit more out of the images. But if everyone is happy with it, that's all that matters. For me, it's more out of curiosity. I see what looks to be blue channel noise in some of the shots.

howdy, good to get all the feed back on the clip ...

However I did have a look at the H264 quicktime and was quite shocked at the flat grainy pictures, not quite what we were seeing when we graded it. We did go for a milky black look but Not that milky!

On further investigation I discovered that it the h264 codec had done some rather extreme gamma lifting or something? Also we were grading to a broadcast monitor not a LCD computer monitor which usually has slightly raised blacks.

As for the grain it was added with our final PAL output in mind, partly for asthetic reasons (the 70's cricket theme) but also because some of the shots were from a Panasonic P2 Camera which were very grainy. The grain certainly doesn't look any good once your put it through some heavy quicktime compression but had a nice softening effect when scaled down to PAL.

I have uploaded a better version of the clip (pre grain) here if anyone i interested ...
