  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

I'm checking RED store 3 times a day every day for that "Coming Soon" under the scarlet picture to disappear, to go ahead and get one no matter what, it just been so long and not to get one does not compute in my brain;
but 'what's in the box' (we probably don't know for sure yet what's in the box) will not be enough for safe and comfortable shooting, and i guess that additional hardware will be required; I understand that i need more than one battery and more than one recording media unit, either CF or SSD, but other than that is there anything else that I must have to be able to shoot?
my budget is kinda open;
thanks!

Perfect!
that's what i thought! You'll be able shoot straight out of the box with no additional hardware, but extra power and media units will extend shooting time to unlimited.
Well, I'll confirm that after I'll get mine:)

Last november 2009, they updated the Scarlet 2/3rd fixed package to include:

Brain/Lens
Side CF Module
REDMote
2.8inch screen (Which they've since discontinued)
REDvolt battery and travel charger.
all for $4750

So we'll have to assume, since they added $1000 for the HDR boards in the Scarlet, and now that the 2.8inch LCD is off, they'll use the 5inch, so We're looking at the base package, ready to shoot (just need cf cards) being in the range of $5750-6500.

This is what I will be getting (still deciding on Fixed/Cinema/Epic-S* though)

5" Touchscreen
Side SSD
2 x 64 GB SSD
SSD Base
Side Handle
2 x Extra Battery
REDmote Pro
Canon Mount*

Bomb EVF and I/O board later on.

I can't decide between the SSD and the CF card for my Scarlet package. I know everything is moving to SSD, but please explain the benefit of SSD on a Scarlet.

As for my Scarlet, I'm planning on:

Scarlet fixed
5" Touchscreen
Side SSD (or CF)
Side Handle
Redmote (would like the pro, but doesn't seem like it will be ready in time)
2 or 3 batteries

I'm sure I'll be adding on many more options as I go along.

You can always switch to SSD when you get enough savings!

Snap. I would need to film about 1 to 2 hours of footage before I could offload the footage onto a laptop so I'm guessing I will have to go for 128GB SSD over 8 CF cards.

Last I seen the 128GB SSD would hold about 55mins of Scarlet 3K footage? Is that correct?

We don't know that you will be able to shoot 120fps on a CF card...let alone, bursts up to 150/180fps in 3K...
Just curious- how people intend to edit 120fps 3K? Last I checked FCP is not able to handle this frame rate?

Don't quote me on this, but should be more than 55min. If the Red One at 4k holds around 8 minutes per CF card ... and at 3k I think it's between 12-15 mins (assuming 24fps and I don't remember the exact Redcode) ... then for the 128gb SSD you are getting 8 times as much -- so my guess is more like 96-120 minutes of 3k footage.

Again totally dependent on many settings, but I would bet you can get at least an hour and a half of 3k footage at decent Redcode from that single 128gb SSD.

This is NOT official (yet) but should give you a good idea what's happening with REDCODE and SSDs.

Double the times for a 256GB card and halve the times for a 64BG card (pretty obvious I guess)...

REDCODE 42 (highest available on RED ONE) equates to ~7.5:1.

So, depending on settings, a 128GB SSD can provide rather a lot of write time.

I suppose one could drop down to a higher compression ratio (maintaining the same bitrate). RC12:1 is still way less compression than most 1080p cameras today.

Currently, I am concerned about power options. Awaiting a detailed announcement from RED soon.

What about power options is concerning to you?

"Concerned" is a poor word to use, sorry. I am just lacking information, that's all. One hour for the standard battery is clearly not enough for my purposes, whereas a full-blown RED Brick might be overkill (and heavy). (What is a REDVolt, exactly? I assume the standard battery.) I understand the power consumption will go down with further optimizations, but 3 hours is what I am looking for. I just don't know the best way to reach that goal, not compromising considerably on weight and cost. I will await more information from RED.

Are you going to to be taking single shots lasting 3 hours? It should only take 10 seconds to swap out a battery. For economical reasons, I'd hope for at least 1.5 hours out of a RED brick; any less and I may have to get a 3rd battery which will obviously add to the cost. That's my only concern with how long the batteries will last.
