Music Video for Singaporean Band "The Sam Willows" that I shot.

First time working with Helium and I must say that I am super impressed with its noise control and colours!

Paired with Zeiss Superspeed, the image is really quite beautiful. Graded in IPP2.

Cheers

love the opening car shot

+1 Good to see a well executed music video with some creativity and ideas behind it.

Great job!! Can you talk a little about car setup (obviously there is some reveal at end)?

Daring. You are good, Kelvin.

This looks great - the music mix also sounds like a million bucks too.

Also the motion tracked credits were a nice surprise - never seen that done before. Took my brain a moment to work out what was going on!

Thanks for all the kind comments! Means a lot to the team. Its a nice feeling to know that the band's music is appreciated outside of our small country. During the process of creation, we tried to create an aesthetic that would help propel the band's appeal to an international audience (navigating the tricky waters of an english based Asian band) and this became a large creative driving force for the MV. Hopefully this opens up more doors to higher production quality MV for such a small industry in Singapore!

And (not sure if I can do this) if you guys want to check out more stuff from the band, heres their youtube channel: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCLrlcIujoB3RLEO2te-x40A

Heres some Behind-the-Scenes Images. We have the overhead rig and the car rigged to electric chain hoists.

We used 4 x rear projection screens with 14k Projectors through the shots with the car. The first scene on tracks, and the last one take on steadicam, with the "rain" (a water hose rigged to the top of the car) and chain hoist moving on music cue.

Because of the screens and the 360s, we could only light from the top, so we used a combination of robe moving heads, sky panels and arri L7c connected to a lighting desk. To get the media and lighting and hoist in time, we were running a central media server to send out timecodes to the respective devices. It was alittle of an overkill because we had to use an GrandMA just for its timecode abilities.

And because we don't have litegear or any sort of dmx controllable led strip in Singapore, I resorted to using Philips Hue Strip inside the car and worked it off through the (not very reliable) phone app. hahaha

The director also wanted the car to lift to reveal the musicians at the bottom at the end. This was a scrapped car, so we had the scrap yard cut out a hole at the bottom of the chassis and gutted the car to bring the weight down to the limit of the chain hoist.

It was definitely a really fun shoot!

It was a surprise that the motion graphic designer threw at us! We didn't expect that too, but it turned out to work so well.

nice work! nice song too! what setup did you use to these underwater takes? ;D

Thank you! It was a small set up for the underwater takes. We didn't have the budget to bring the epic-w underwater and the next best underwater rig that fit the budget was a 5D MKIII with underwater case. Blacked out a section of the pool and lit with a M40 and M18. But matching up the shots from 5D to 8k footage is almost impossible, we did all possible sharpening/ post magic, blown it on purpose to get alittle bit more perceived crispness to try to get it linked as close as possible.
