Here is White Swan, an independently made music video with 50K euro budget that has spent several months in post production at Gnomon school of visual effects. It was shot the day after the beta of build 16 was released. Boy was i glad it came out just in time, since i was working in a very low light situation. I really wanted to post stuff then but was unable to do so, but finally i can show it.

White Swan was shot in an amazing derelict coalmine in belgium, it was my first time using the RED camera and first time on a 'semi-pro' shoot. I had a 120K lighting rig, all tungsten; too poor for HMI's, and not enough money to shoot tests! Much of it was underexposed due to the huge area i had to light. It was technically very taxing to shoot, no greenscreen apart from the penultimate shot.

Post was RED alert then after effects / maya from DPX etc. No pro grading unfortunately but it looks good i think. Would love to hear feedback.

wow man this looks really awesome. What was the dress made of and how did it dissolve? finally, describe your methods for shooting the water reverse while she sings forward. Did you have her sing backwards? Or did you shoot various plates to composite.

thanks for comments.

The dress was made of candy floss or cotton candy as you might call it. Once the dress became bigger we had a fabric substitute. Everything was shot backwards. The poor girl (Lolly Jane Blue - the artist) was naked on a dirty concrete floor under cold rain covered in cotton candy in front of a load of men having to sing backwards at 30fps for 10 hours a night. Some of the sync is off due to the difficulty of this, we didn't have time to check sync properly on the shoot, but i like to think it gives it a human feel, we're not perfect! I dunno. It's not a commercial project.

There were no plates used, no greenscreen apart from penultimate shot. Everything apart from last two shots and CG intro was shot on location and then VFX elements were added later. The last shot was on location but had a basic set built to which VFX elements were later added.

I was at the Gnomon visual EFX school on the night they had the makers of the Benjamin Button movie, well the EFX teams I guess. Not David Fincher and the DP.

Anyway, before the Benjamin Button thing started, they showed this as a teaser. It wasn't a finished project but it looked INCREDIBLE. I think if I watch a vimeo, it might ruin my memory of how it looked on a giant screen projected.

I think I'll keep my memory in tact,

Exactly how I imagined it. VERY hard to pull off on her part and very creative on your. I love it.

I wish i could have been there. I'd love to see it projected, i've only seen it on my macbook pro and compressed.

wow, a non-commercial project for 50K?

someone sure has money.

Was funded by Rotterdam film fund, and tax video clip fund in Netherlands, both through an application process. Post was for free due to a very kind offer from Gnomon visual effects school, where the director had previously studied.

I don't know what was used for VFX other than maya and after effetcs, but there was most likely more.

Visually fantastic. Thanks for sharing.

I love this. Evocative and fragile.

You're telling me that you shot her singing WHILE you were stop motioning the candy OFF her?
